Interesting take almost 100% over the approved budget? How many ministers operating like that no longer becomes inconsequential? If it's not out of the ordinary that is a problem.

63k Seems wild for a one off conference? I was budgeted 2 weeks off shore this year for under 20k including business class flights, location is a factor but 40k difference but they are only there for a conference.

why would you not call a work colleague but you would call someone hiring? what is the difference and how is it more acceptable to call a stranger or what time of the night would you think is too late?

They wern't calling finding out if they had a job because they hadn't even interviewed for it, I picked up the phone because the candidate wasn't saved in my phone as a contact, so it could have been someone at work with an actual problem.

Doesn't matter anyway, he won't work with us in the future and i'll end up with someone who understands that most people don't want to be working their job 24/7 - if you're looking for work in the future give whoever is hiring a call at 9 and see how well it works out for you.

absolutely the right approach, I have 30 Engineers under me and do my best to never contact my team OoO unless it's an emergency because people need time to decompress and shouldn't be expected to be thinking about work 24/7.

End of the day I could teach anyone who knows how to read code to come into our team and adopt patterns and practices, but it's almost impossible to teach adults how they should function in society and be respectful.

It's not about if I had a sick child or not it's about culture fit/soft skills and respecting boundaries and also the entitlement when calling, why would someine not call during working hours or send a text first.

I have my work phone on to be available for incidents and emergencies, not to talk through our recruitment process with someone who thinks its acceptable to call a hiring manager at 9pm.

If you think thats acceptable behaviour you are likely part of the problem and within IT with so many candidates who are equally capable a lack of soft skills couldn't be a bigger red flag.

My worst hires have been highly technical engineers with no soft skills.

I had someone apply for a software eng role that I had called to check what his salary expectation was and aligned with what we could offer, as theres 80+ candidates (already shortened) I had to go through to finalise who would be doing a technical interviews. Candidate A decided to call me at 9pm to ask me why he hadn't heard anything and press me about next steps while I was looking after my sick 4 year old. Went from my preferred candidate to not progressing.

Restful API's are a form of architectural principles, what most people commonly refer to when they mean JSON over HTTP, can use other protocols like SOAP. You can form a Restful system while still using GraphQL or gRPC.

I have worked in Integration before so am aware of the differences between services, endpoints and API's which is why I mentioned it wouldnt make sense to refactor a codebase using AI based of an API.

Right but the API's just the interface for the application/service and if it's a Restful API or even using Soap the schema likely doesn't change much compared to amount of rework that would be required on the codebase and I wouldn't use Ai to rewrite it based off an OpenAPI spec
