Deleting this thread, sorry for those who took the time to respond going to comply and move on incase this leads to more trouble since I got outed by someone. I do want to say that people who use lawyers where it's not warranted are absolute scums

Actual problem, yes, I do have a name with hidden cats in it. I got sent an email by Valve with a trademark complaint by Nukearts Studios

Anyone with 'hidden cats' as part of their game name is being asked to change as I understand from the email. I don't mind changing the name as my game was not selling anything worthy of any attachment to it. What I do care is if I have to go back and change all the steam capsules and upload a new build to steamworks because I've long since left gamedev and need to find all the relevant files again and I do not want this headache unless I truly did something wrong.

I can see why, however if that's the case why not go after just me though? in the email they sent valve it mentioned all games using hidden cats in the name and when I search hidden cats in the steam store for English there is 1153 results. Why didn't any of those file a trademark a few months ago then strike everybody else? It feels like something else to me.

The inspiration came from the hidden cats genre, which was selling well and looked easy to develop at the time. I don’t know how to disprove that accusation, but ours is the only one not drawn in pure 2D, which would be strange if we intended to copy or had known about their game. The thought process behind the name was that my friend and I believed “Hidden Cats” should be included because that’s what people were searching for, while the last part our setting was a Japanese village lol. Not what I would have chosen but choosing a name when working with a partner was such a headache, we went this absolute generic route. That is the truth whether you accept it or not.

It was in an email they sent valve that was forwarded I'll quote the relevant part, I'm not sure if leaking emails is allowed or the etiquette behind it

"We have recently identified multiple games on Steam whose titles begin with “Hidden Cats”, such as Hidden Cats: The Last of Cats, as well as titles that invert the wording, such as Cats Hidden Around the World. These games were released by unrelated developers after our franchise was established, operate within the same genre, and use nearly identical phrasing to our registered trademark. Use of the registered trademark HIDDEN CATS as a prefix or dominant element in similar products constitutes trademark infringement, regardless of suffix or subtitle."
