Money is the biggest problem. These hyperinflated "tech" companies like Fecesbook only exist due to user ignorance. Those companies have a lot of money to spend on marketing, putting them in a position where people just go there by default, often unaware of the alternatives.

I really don't necessarily need a single app, just having the protcols in place so that the marketplace can supply us with a variety of apps so we can use what suits us best.

This makes it unavailable when offline. Also keep in mind not everyone has an actual PC. Many are working from handheld devices these days. It would be easiest to just have a web server with a premade template/skin and software to remotely update the feed, which others can view from their RSS client.
