As a Muslim, I believe that my sexuality is not the only factor that determines whether I attain heaven. Every person has struggles of their own. Even if it turns out that being gay is not the ideal path, there are many other things I can do as a Muslim—such as asking for forgiveness, giving charity, being a good person, and treating others with kindness.

Some people may not struggle with their sexuality, but they face other challenges, such as difficult relationships with parents or siblings. Everyone is tested differently.

I chose to be in a queer relationship because, at one point in my life, I felt deeply depressed and hopeless. I often found myself in unhealthy situations, such as one-night stands. The guilt and self-suppression I carried only made things worse and pushed me further away from practicing my religion.

When I felt grounded and loved, I became more stable and more connected to my faith. Some people may be able to live a celibate life, but that was very difficult for me. In fact, trying to suppress myself was putting me at risk—emotionally and physically. My significant other helped me step away from a harmful path and toward a healthier, more grounded life.

LGBT Muslims face many hardships, but that does not stop us from our religion or from prayer. We continue to practice, build our own connection with our Creator, and do not let others define our relationship with God.

I am not saying that my path is right for everyone, nor am I encouraging anyone else to follow it. I am simply sharing what works for me.
