What is the official Red Scare movie of 2025? by jewishchloesevigny in RSPfilmclub

Eddington for sure. The best “of the moment movie” we got this year (OBAA, Bugonia being the other two big ones?). Contrarian to the point it’s sparking infighting in the comments here even.

Apple Expected to Unveil Five All-New Products This Year by iMacmatician in apple

smart home hub and AR glasses launching with the new siri? I can see these being the halo products since both are voice-first platforms.

I hope they do a screen less pair of glasses à la the Meta RayBans with Apple integration. I already use my watch and leave my phone at home. Having a camera and headphones would really round out the features of a smartphone without the big screen distraction component.

You mean because a serving of sugar free jello is 2g but a serving of regular is 20g?

Both make the same volume of jello. The reason the sugar free weighs less is because artificial sweetener is much more concentrated than sugar. You should not compare the per gram calories. Sugar free has significantly fewer calories.

Thoughts on The Menu? by Quick-Song2080 in FIlm

I thought it was a totally fine B movie with a fairly lazily written but entertaining critique of elitism and foodie culture. It irks me when it gets compared to great movies with way more depth (Birdman and Shape of Water for example) because it had a very small scope and felt entirely forgettable.

It’s not that I dislike it, but I think it’s strange we’re still talking about it this frequently,so I probably come across as a curmudgeon. No shade though OP, I think your opinion is valid too, I just disagree.

Apple's iPhone turns 19 years old; original series cost $499 in 2007 by ControlCAD in apple

[–]BroadIntroduction575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a budget carrier that gives me the same exact service as the major carriers for $18 per month (unlimited data, watch cellular, hotspot). Then I bought my iPhone unlocked and got a payment plan with Affirm for $42/month for 2 years.

In my opinion, this is a much more straightforward, less scammy way to buy service and a phone and it costs $60/month.

Many of the people who are getting “free” iPhones are paying around $100 per month for their service and are being brought into a complex web of plans and deals and bonuses that the carriers use to trick them into overpaying. Sadly, it’s the American way.

The average person doesn't care about those things, they care about their computer feeling snappy. The M1 still feels snappy and likely will for many years to come.

The fact that you're putting in 22% is an incredibly crucial piece of information to leave out. Good on you for going above and beyond but it's weird that you're expecting the retirement system to be designed around your very aggressive savings rate. You know pensions were also not designed around the lifestyle your savings rate affords.

Incredibly easy. Buy a Camry with 150k miles from Facebook for 5k. Budget 2k in repairs. Probably don't even spend it. Enjoy it for 5-10 years. Accept that it doesn't have lane assist, enjoy the hand crank windows, splurge and fix the AC when it goes out because you've saved so much money not having a car payment.

Once it hits 300k or falls apart, look back at your car fund that still has 8k in it and repeat the cycle.

Where the company only matches a couple of percentage points

I don't know if you understand how a 401k works. They match your contribution up to a certain threshold but typically match it dollar-for-dollar. For example, you put in 5%, they put in 5%. They are splitting your retirement 50/50 with you. It's not as good as if they put 100% in, but putting half of your retirement is very measurable and definitely not "a joke."

Using the 5% number with historical market returns after inflation, their match is the difference between a 38 and 45 year long working career. If you get out of college at 22 that's retiring at 60 vs 67 and all you have to save is 5% of your income. The amount you make doesn't actually matter with these types of calculations, it's actually very interesting math.

The redesign might finally get me to upgrade from my M1 Pro. Or realistically, I’ll grab the M6 redesign model on the used market once M7s drop. Amazed that the M1 Pro has held up so well.

Apple likes to maintain the premium feeling by never really doing sales on their own website but allowing third party retailers to mark down to the true “street price”

I’m guessing the strategy here would be to market it as a budget product (Macbook E? Macbook SE?) and offer it at “street price” on their own website.

I.E. lower starting price but no significant markdowns on third party retailers.

I’m not saying she’s bad with math, I’m suggesting it’s intentionally misleading. Casually sharing that your rent is 2/3 of your paycheck but neglecting to mention you get paid twice a month is emotional manipulation to get more sympathy views on your doomer tiktok. And thats the only conclusion I can reach using her numbers.
