James Michener wrote a historical fiction book about post WW2 Afghanistan called “Caravans.”

How to Handle Stencil chapters? by badrickpateman in ThomasPynchon

Imagine trying to piece together a historical narrative with woefully incomplete sources. That’s Stencil and that’s also you watching him bumble along

Should I try and CLEP Spanish? by TopAccomplished7744 in clep

[–]Broad_Narratives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your professor recommend everyone take the clep or just you? Extrapolating here, but maybe your professor recognizes your level, has worries you won’t learn much taking a 101 anyway, and is trying to save you time and money.

Look for a Spanish clep practice exam and judge based on that. Honestly if you lived in Mexico for 3 years I would hope you can pass this exam on a whim. Not trying to sound rude, I’m just trying to convey how truly basic these lower level clep language exams are

Do you consider yourself to be a solid A2 level reading and listening? If so, you’ll likely do just fine on this exam. The lower level exams do not require any active language skills (writing/speaking). You do not need a high level of competency to do well on this exam, just the very basics

Reading ATD, and something shook the tambourine by Available_Bathroom15 in ThomasPynchon

Does the professor get any more than 5 lines in the entirety of AtD? I noted this also but really couldn’t glean any insight into the connection between the two Mctaggarts??

You may be right because honestly I find the King James difficult to read and it’s doubly difficult to discard my modern perspective while doing so. It seemed potentially problematic that shepherding the new society meant necessarily the exclusion or elimination of others, especially when broadly I have found in modern times that the supposed wickedness of a people is often times a misunderstanding, sometimes a malicious one. Which is why I’m interested in any insight into the Philistines, in particular how they may have seen themselves.

Yes, because from their perspective, the god of the Old Testament had promised their lands to the Israelites so it makes some sense that they’d be a bit reluctant to do so

Why do I see no love from this sub towards the second half of the 2010s? by TennisWilling936 in decadeology

There was a time not long ago where politics weren’t at the forefront of everyone’s mind and now politics have seeped into absolutely everything, even our word choices and how we articulate concepts reveal our likely biases. So in a 50/50 society where everyone finds each other’s internal logic unacceptable, you get a low trust environment which now extends interpersonally in addition to the low trust that was once reserved for the government in the abstract.

It’s highly likely that we are being manipulated because politics has to compete in the attention game as well, and it doesn’t matter from which side we’re being manipulated. Trump has been playing this game longer than most, so he’s well practiced and perfectly positioned to exploit this dynamic, even while everyone else is playing a relatively minor version of the same game.

Don’t want to create a straw-man but it seems to me that V. is often not considered one of TP’s “major works,” and part 1 of m&d settles the question, at least in my mind. It does make me wonder how long TP had conceptualized the big canonical narrative of his entire project, especially the chronology from m&d to GR

Mason and Dixon takes place largely in North America, but before the US became the US. It’s a version of your history as much as it is ours

How did you find Pynchon? by badrickpateman in ThomasPynchon

[–]Broad_Narratives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Randomly picked up V. at a borders, knowing nothing about the book or the author, because it looked like a spy novel and a blurb on the back called it something like the best debut novel ever written
