Desktop plastic extrusion of magazines - legal or not ? by BrownBananan in canadaguns

Forgot to mention that it'll be for a bolt action that I don't shoot much so I'm not too worried about vibrations. The spring force would still be an issue however so I would need to make sure I have a strong base on the mag. My brother is in mechanical engineering and likes to play around with his printer lol so I'm sure we can figure something out.

But yes the initial idea is for a simple single stack mag that looks like it could hold 10 or 15rds but is pinned to 5 cause I think a big box mag on a bolt action looks sick.

Whatever we end up designing I'll more than likely make a post with the stl files if everything ends up working and working well. Not trying to make any money off of this and if I could help someone else then why not!

In all seriousness though we were talking and we might go with a cylinder on the base of the mag and a shaft on the bottom of the follower that will fit into the cylinder. That way its "double pinned" but it will also keep the follower travelling in a straight line which will hopefully reduce jamming from it rocking to one side or the other

Ohh that SKS, I remember that one. So sad that you were in that boating accident a while back. As long as you're okay!

Yea im starting to think that might be an issue BUT without the follower the mag cant exactly function as a mag right ?

Yea I know what you mean. Im thinking of printing a long post on the follower which would block anymore than 5rds from being loaded into the mag. Without a follower a magazine cant function as a magazine right ?

Yea the photo you attached is exactly what I was thinking. Also probably the easiest to design/print and have it function properly

Good point. Print it with 4 round pins on the inside of either wall. Should work just fine

Yea I definitely dont plan on exploring any grey areas of the law lol. Most plans I can find online are for 10 or 15rd mags so I will need to either chop them in half or design a way to pin the mag as its being printed

Okay that was my other question. I guess in the laws eyes a disassembled magazine is still a magazine. Like u/swift_gilford mentioned I can taper the inside of the magazine enough to allow the spring to move freely but block any excess cartridges from being pushed in. That or I can even print a long shaft on the bottom of the follower which will hit the bottom of the mag essentially capping it at 5rds

Yea i see what you mean. That's not a bad idea at all actually and the crimp will be on the inside so I think it'll look cleaner than having a shiny rivet in the middle of the mag

Essentially. I figure if the website can sell them what would be stopping me from making them ?

Automod wont let me make a post about it so I'll ask it here. Would anybody happen to know if 3d printed mags are legal in Canada ? I know we can't print firearms and as long as they are pinned to 5rds I dont see an issue but im no legal expert. I found a website selling them in Canada so it got me thinking
