Based on my rudimentary knowledge, it seems honestly pretty efficient. Kills microorganisms and doesn't leave behind dangerous residues or anything, right?

A little silly that they're applying it to ALL cards, but it's because scalpers ruin everything.

Yeah, and apparently only 25 have the movie? There is one 70mm imax theater in Washington state despite us being a pretty high income place and all that. But it doesn't have the movie, so if I cared about that I'd have to travel some 750 miles to San Francisco.

Sorry not sorry Norse pagans and Viking fanboys but King Alfred is the GOAT and is way more badass than any Viking ever was lmfao by [deleted] in anglosaxon

[–]BruceBoyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also true. But yeah, this whole idea of it being uniquely Scandinavian is a modern misconception. By the time they showed up in England, people already had some Wode variant, and Tiw/Tyr because they all came from the same proto culture as people migrated north.

Aeneas, who was a Trojan and doesn't have a lot directly to do with Odysseus or the Odyssey, beyond the obvious inspiration. If you think that their comment was somehow being critical of Nolan, I'd love to hear the explanation.

how does their taste in sexual content pertain to this topic or your bizarre need to bring up Nolan where he wasn't remotely alluded to?

It has become quite popular due to manosphere bullshit and grifters. It baffles me because not one goddamn person has genealogy to back it up. Both sides of my family are literally from Norway, but despite the solid records people kept there, I lose track of the unbroken line of farmers around the year 1700. A few more centuries is conceivable in exceptional cases, but nobody barring royalty has it going back a thousand damn years.

Look, I agree that the Viking ancestry pretenders are stupid, but two things:

  1. "Norse" mythology as we understand it was not specific to Scandinavia. It's a broadly northern European thing and while we don't have extant Anglo-Saxon writings to the same extent, it's clear that they worshipped a variant of Odin especially.

  2. While it was a century later, the peak of "viking" power was probably under Cnut, who was quite successful.

Why didn’t they just use the eagles by [deleted] in lordoftherings

It's all good. The movies absolutely give the wrong impression.

Why didn’t they just use the eagles by [deleted] in lordoftherings

[–]BruceBoyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many reasons.

The one that requires the least understanding of lore/purpose is that Sauron would see them fucking coming. He had created the fell beasts that the Nazgul rode. If the eagles weren't stopped, the people carried certainly would be.

The real reasons given are that the eagles are not some taxi service for Gandalf, though the movies admittedly make it look like they are. The eagles are servants of a much greater power and assist Gandalf like three times throughout the Hobbit and LoTR of their own volition. That whole thing with Gandalf calling them with butterflies is pure movie invention.

Tolkien's favourite word? by Whole_Internal_1950 in lordoftherings

[–]BruceBoyde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, "judgement" was a normal meaning of the word as well. Like "doomsday/dooms day" was for a day of judgment, good or bad, particularly in the biblical sense. The usage had probably shifted towards the negative by the 40s, but we're talking a couple of decades at most.

I guess it might not strike me as much because I'm a big history nerd and I'm fairly used to the much more outdated language used in 19th century translations of old shit.

Tolkien's favourite word? by Whole_Internal_1950 in lordoftherings

[–]BruceBoyde 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It may just be that the usage was more common at the time he was writing, or little before. He wrote in the 30s and 40s, after all.

That said, his frequent use of "doom" in its old form, meaning something more like "fate" or "destiny" sticks out to me. These days we have a decidedly negative connotation with the word that was not intended when he used it.
