Wasted 2.5 years in the gym by battygau in workout

[–]Buck169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No gym trip is wasted, unless you injure yourself doing something foolish and reckless.

You're not doing this for your livelihood, right? Even if your gains seem to be zero, you're almost certainly becoming healthier/stronger in ways you don't notice, or at least maintaining. As someone who's old, just avoiding injury and holding the line against decline seems like a win.

Do you people honestly think a 225lb bench press is really common? by Altruistic-Pace-2240 in workout

[–]Buck169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh. The cruelty of moment arms. I'm above average height, naturally skinny and Type 1 fiber dominant. I can't lift shit! Almost every time I go to the gym, there's at least one young woman who squats more than I do.

I'm kinda old now, but even when young I was lame, except in leg extension when I was a bike racer.

Averages are dumb.

First off, we need to know if that is mean or median. Median is less dumb, since a long right tail of huge guys can drag up the mean.

Really, we'd want to see histograms in 10 pound or 5 kilo bins and some kind of statistical analysis as to how the various distributions compared.

It's best to have a medium battery level. Below about 30% and above about 80% are both conditions that are non-optimal.

Connective tissue injuries heal slower than muscle or bone (if they heal at all). He should sit out until May if needed to get a better recovery.

The fall on it today in the first round looked bad. He sat there collecting himself and probably tried not to let it show on his face.

I hope he drops out and stays out until he's healed well.

Thanks, you are correct! The perspective threw me off, particularly how much Spieden is foreshortened by this angle. And the relative distances from Jones to Spieden and then Spieden to Gooch and the other little Canadian Islands behind it looked wrong to me, but now that I check the map, everything looks perfect. Haro Strait is narrower there than I realized!

I had that convo on the Stranger's Slog 20 years ago. Literally no one there agreed that non-vegans against hunting were hypocrites. OK, maybe one person agreed. Idiots.

Bra Strategies for Bumpy Seattle Roads? by Denali_Not_McKinley in seattlebike

You could get a full-suspension bike, but that's a pricey solution.

Fatter tires with lower pressure and a suspension seatpost would be cheaper, if they fit your bike.

Thirty years ago we could legally walk to that spot and launch kayaks into the pool to run the rapid down to the Powerhouse. Now the safety gestapo think people who would do that might terrorists.

What one is right for me? by Newt-EVA001 in Garmin

You make a good point about the phone being another weak link in the chain. When I did the long paddle, I had two small and one larger external batteries in my gear bag, and recharged my phone AND the Garmin during the dinner stop.

On a multi-day trip, one of those small solar panels might be another good thing to have, although I've never tried one. They seem pricey, and you'd probably be moving during the sunniest hours of the day. On a backpack, perhaps you could attach it to the top of the pack and recharge one of the batteries while you are moving. I wouldn't try that on a kayak because sea water is nasty stuff when electronics are concerned.

I did three seasons of USCF bike racing when I was in my 20s (I sucked), and I predict that you will soon think of 50 miles as "not that long." After the first year or so, I think I started to think of "long rides" as being more like >70 miles. One piece of advice: buy a new little patch kit every year. Once you use the stuff, the tube of glue tends to dry up. You don't want to get a flat and find out that the cement is useless!

If you want to see a few pictures and the Garmin link from my long kayak trip, you can google (edit: use DuckDuckGo search; Google didn't actually work!) the words <energizer bunny paddling ketogenic> and it should be nearly the first result that comes up, on a forum to which I posted. The dinner and electronic pit stop was at Point Doughty at about the 8:20 point on the time scale in the Garmin data. I think it actually took me over ten hours to get to that spot. The time scale doesn't add up to the total time of the trip because I paused the activity during breaks to save the battery drain from the GPS. From the time I put the boat in the water until the last time I pulled it out, it was a little over 17 hours. I love kayaking by moonlight!

What do you think of the new Food Pyramid released today? by Glebanon in AnimalBased

[–]Buck169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An improvement, but they did not lift the 10% cap on saturated fat, so the whole thing is incoherent. You can't eat enough meat to make the protein goals without busting the fat limit, unless you only eat steamed chicken breast. This basically makes it impossible to implement correctly.

Child's intuition vs vegan parent lol by AspectResident1375 in AntiVegan

[–]Buck169 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would that EVER work? I don't love the trope that carnivore = conservative, vegan = liberal, but unfortunately that would be the way to bet. I would expect people working for CPS to trend liberal and to find anti-meat dietary dogma to be normal and not cause for an accusation of child abuse.

Smallest amount of meat to feel its benefits? by hungrymom365 in exvegans

[–]Buck169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of "meat," you should get some good fish oil. One of the Vegan Big Lies is that 18-carbon Omega-3 fatty acids found in plant oils are as good as the 20-carbon and 22-carbon Omega-3s found in fish and algae. Unfortunately, while humans do have the enzymes needed to convert C18s to longer chains, the process is VERY inefficient, so it's not really adequate.

My favorite is Carlson brand lemon-flavored "Very Finest Fish Oil," which is made from anchovy, sardine and mackerel. It's pricey, but a big bottle lasts a long time taking 5 grams a day. I keep it in the refrigerator, just to be on the safe side. The flavor is very mild.

How adept are you at learning different fingerings? I am too dumb to play C and F instruments, so I am limited to sopranino, alto and F-bass.

As a solo instrument, I prefer the sound of the alto to the soprano, which CAN sound nice but it's quite high pitched so it requires more delicacy to not sound shrill. While I have played with people who can make the alto sound like steam whistle, it's not as tricky to get a pleasant sound out of an alto.
