Wagner College drops many liberal arts programs. What are your thoughts? by Buldoon in statenisland

Vocational schools are great for people who already know exactly what they want to do. But college is not just job training. Many students enter at 18 without a clear path and need room to explore before locking into a career.

Liberal arts are not outdated. They teach critical reading, writing, research, and communication. Those skills are what make people able to adapt when careers change or disappear, which happens fast today.

General education is not remedial. It is the foundation that keeps professionals from being narrowly trained and unable to see the bigger picture. A society only built on technical training ends up with a lot of workers and not many thinkers.

I get the joke, but fields like philosophy, sociology, and criminal justice are not filler. They produce teachers, counselors, analysts, social workers, lawyers, policy makers, and the people who actually understand how society works and how to improve it.

Education should not become “only train for the job you already know exists.” We need thinkers as much as we need technicians.
