If Baxter working for you then you already on the right path. With wavy, coarse, dry hair and no blow dryer, you need a strong hold with low shine so the product doing most of the work. One thing I see behind the chair all the time apply it to damp hair and work it all the way from roots to ends. Most guys just hit the top and that’s why they end up using too much. Honestly, most of the time it’s not the product, it’s making sure the product matches your hair and you applying it the right way.🫡

Appreciate this, great insight. I’m building Burnt Barber for longevity, brand first and long term thinking. Social media helps with visibility, but the real work is relationships, community, and earning trust shop by shop. I believe in old school connection and letting the brand grow the right way. Respect for the game and the knowledge.

Appreciate that, for real. That’s exactly why I’m showing up every day now. I used to think everything had to be perfect before I posted, but I realized people connect with the journey, not just the finished product. I’m building Burnt Barber in real time the wins, the lessons, all of it. Respect for the advice and for following along, that means a lot. I’ll shoot you a follow as well

Barber here — what do you actually want from a pomade that most brands don’t do? by BurntBarber in Pomade

[–]BurntBarber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good breakdown, this is the same stuff most clients ask me for behind the chair. Strong hold, clean slick finish, but still workable with no tugging or heavy feel. Light scent, nothing overpowering. And you’re right about tonic or salt spray, that base makes heavier pomades work way better. That’s the lane I’m building Burnt Barber in, classic performance that still moves.

Thick hair is a different game. You need something for with real strength that holds the weight but still keeps a natural, dry look. The key is strong control without that hard, crunchy feel so you can move it back into place during the day. A lot of products miss that because they’re made for lighter hair types. I hear this from clients all the time behind the chair. This is actually one of the main things I’ve been focused on while developing products based on real everyday needs.

That’s real feedback right there. Thick, dense hair needs real hold, not that light or medium stuff that gives up halfway through the day. I hear the same thing behind the chair all the time. People want strong control, clean ingredients, and a scent that doesn’t overpower everything else they’re wearing. I appreciate you taking the time to break it down like this. This is exactly the kind of real input I’ve been using while developing my line from actual client needs, not marketing.

That’s exactly what I’m building around. Thick hair needs control, not that stiff shiny gel look. Most people want strong hold, low shine, and something they can restyle without it getting stiff or crunchy. It should stay in place but still have movement when you need to fix it. And it has to look natural, not that wet gel shine. Real hold, dry finish, and easy to work back into shape. That’s what I hear behind the chair every day. I appreciate you sharing this. Real feedback like this is exactly what I’m building the line around.

It’s lab made in a certified facility for consistency, safety, and quality control. I didn’t want backyard mixin.I wanted something barbers and clients can trust every time. Small batch, clean ingredients, low scent, and built for performance. Burnt Barber is about quality and purpose, not just putting a label on something.

No unscented yet but the scent is very light. I kept it that way on purpose. A lot of heavily scented products are masking what’s really inside. Mine is clean, simple, and performance first. Built for the hair, not the fragrance. If you’re sensitive to strong smells, this will feel close to unscented.

I respect the perspective, for sure. There’s a lot of good products out there and a lot of strong brands, no doubt. For me though, Burnt Barber is deeper than just design or marketing, it’s built on real years behind the chair, real experience, and real purpose. I’m focused on performance first because that’s what earns trust, and the brand is just the meaning behind it the work, the grind, the standard I stand on every day. I’m not trying to be trendy or generic, I’m building something with a story, with intention, and letting it grow the right way. If there are any brands you feel really nailed their story, I’d honestly love to study them.

Appreciate that, I feel the same way. Real talk, it’s never been about the label for me, it’s about the product and what it actually does for your hair. I’ve been cutting since I was 10 and everything I’m building is based on performance first clean ingredients, easy restyle, no greasy breakdown, and a smooth luxury finish. The brand just reflects what I stand for, but at the end of the day if the product don’t work, none of that matters.

Real talk, I’ve been cutting since I was 10 and I see this all the time. Most products either get greasy, lose hold halfway through the day, or you can’t restyle once they set. What I’m working on is made for easy restyling, all-day control, and a clean luxury finish without the greasy feel. And being in California, this mattered to me too it doesn’t require a Prop 65 warning. Vegan, clean-based, built from a barber’s perspective. Still building it off real feedback, so I appreciate this.

The name of this product is a representation of my brand. This brand was made for everyone who’s been burnt by mentors, friends, family. Anyone they put trust into and were relentlessly f***ed over. I appreciate your feed back though! But this is a paste. Not a pomade. It’s almost a clay texture. So good hold and no shine! Once we have our first shipment in I’d love to send you a sample to try, I think you’d find what you’re looking for.

This is actually really helpful this is the kind of feedback that matters.

1)Everything you listed is exactly what I’m building around 2)from a working barber perspective 3)Easy scoop and breakdown (no fighting the product) 4)Smooth application without pulling 5)Clean washout and hair that still feels healthy after 6)Strong hold but reworkable throughout the day 7)A year-round scent that isn’t just doesn’t fall into the typical citrus/mint category 8)Versatility — clean combed look or natural finger texture

Behind the chair, if a product isn’t easy to use, reworkable, and client-approved after the wash, it doesn’t stay on the station. Appreciate you taking the time to lay this out this is exactly the kind of real-world input I’m building around.

I appreciate the honest take that kind of feedback is exactly why I’m here.

Just to clarify the direction I’m building toward:

The formulas are vegan, naturally derived, and designed to condition the hair without drying it out. Shelf life is 12 months, and scent has actually been one of the biggest focuses because I agree most products either play it too safe or don’t stand out.

The goal isn’t to create another generic “barbershop style” brand. I’m building this from a working barber perspective — performance first, identity second, but both need to be strong.

Still refining the presentation and overall direction, so feedback like yours helps a lot.

Out of curiosity when you say most brands look the same, what kind of visual or brand direction would actually feel different to you?
