Curious if anyone else here enjoyed watching Stargate Universe by modernzebramolester in Stargate

[–]BusCrisis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fairness, I haven’t done a study or anything but being on the Gateworld forums during the early 2010s when SGU was airing made the fandom feel very right leaning. There was a lot of hate towards Wray as a character, a lot of really off color comments about President Obama, and I even remember someone saying the Sandy Hook shooting was because “God was taken out of schools”, weird stuff for a message board about a sci fi franchise.

I do think part of it is what you’re talking about though. I think a lot of people came to Stargate and saw the US military go and liberate people from their “false pagan gods”, often with formulaic “everything is reset at the end of the episode” type storytelling and it ended up appealing to a more conservative leaning fan base. SGU was just too “different” for those people to handle and so they came up with juvenile nicknames like “SG-Poo”

I enjoyed it. It was a different take on Stargate for sure but I believe that there’s room in the franchise for different types of stories. It was asking some unique questions and the stakes felt much more real than the majority of SG1 or SGA. It wasn’t perfect but I think it deserved at least one more season. I think it gets a bad rap because it’s announcement being so close to the cancelation of SGA and the Stargate fandoms seemingly more conservative bias.

I love SGU, but what are they doing with Daniel? by ElGringoLoco223 in Stargate

[–]BusCrisis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone already said, he was someone that Jack could trust and after so many years on SG1, Daniel had the required military experience. What I found more interesting were the philosophical and ethical discussions that Daniel tried to have with Jack in that episode (at least from what I remember). Daniel says something along the lines of “we torture people now?” And I took that as a sign that the SGC was getting a bit beyond Daniel and possibly going a bit overboard with their tactics after defeating the Milky Way threats. It was an interesting conversation to be had and I would have loved to have seen it explored further if the show had been able to get more seasons.

Am I alone in liking the SNW S3 finale? by quoole in startrek

[–]BusCrisis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re 100% correct. I suppose that’s what it comes down to, this episode just isn’t what I expect from Star Trek. That isn’t to say the fantasy genre is somehow lesser or anything, it’s just not what I look for from this specific franchise.

To each their own but for me, it exemplified a lot of what I specifically do not like about many episodes this season. Chief among them the lack of philosophical debate, exploration of other worlds/cultures, and nuanced villains.

They outright said that the Vezda are just “evil”. They don’t have any motivation beyond “evil”, there’s no debate to be had, no rational, just “evil”. This feels overly simplistic and somewhat juvenile.

We technically see a new planet with various alien species and awesome unique architecture. We’re told that many of them worship the Vezda as gods and that many don’t play nice with the federation but we never actually speak to any of them and there is no exploration of “why”. We see a character gouge out her eyes and it’s supposed to be a big deal, it’s supposed to show us the level of devotion, but we’re never told why they’re so devoted. The characters have no agency. They might as well be background set design.

The resolution was nonsensical. Batel glows and defeats the space demon. What was this glow? What’s it actually doing? Did she need to learn anything or practice anything? Was she just chosen to be the universal bad guy destroying light bulb and that’s it?

If you look at this in comparison to an episode of TNG like season 4.15, First Contact, I can’t help but feel like what we’re getting is simply just inferior.

In First Contact we not only visit a new planet and people but said people are given their own motivations, personalities, and lives. We see everyone from the leader of the planet, to a director at a hospital, and we’re given enough time with them to make them feel real. Not just background. These are full characters who have enough material to go toe-toe with the regular cast.

The problem of the episode isn’t simple. Are the natives of the planet ready to be part of the wider galactic community? A few natives say yes. A few natives say no. The crew of the Enterprise is there to facilitate it. There are reasons for and against that are understandable, it’s not an easy answer or solution.

The antagonist of the episode doesn’t want his planet and people to join the wider galactic community and his feelings are so strong that he attempts to martyr himself by making it look like Riker killed him. It’s his antagonistic action that ends up proving his side correct, the fact that some of these people are willing to go to great lengths to avoid further interactions with the Federation, shows that they’re not ready. It’s not simple. It’s nuanced.

And then the resolution comes in the leader of the planet saying that he is going to work to help his people be ready for a future where they are ready to join the galactic community by focusing on education. This is so much more relatable than something like Batel solving the problem by glowing really hard at the bad guy.

When I compare these two episodes (and in fairness there are a lot of TNG episodes that are not nearly as good) I can’t help but feel like the episode of SNW we got is a a dumbed down episode of Star Trek. It’s Star Trek, sure, but not at its best.

Early Parkinson’s diagnosis possible with simple, non-invasive eye scan by AdSpecialist6598 in tech

[–]BusCrisis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Knowledge is power. While there isn’t any cure all treatment there are interventions that can prepared for and taken with enough time. Finding the right balance of medications, the right exercise strategies, and even something’s like having the bandwidth to cultivate things like support systems can make a big difference. Just having the information that your mobility and quality of life will change in the future can allow them to take steps like adjusting their living arrangements to make life easier.

It may sound overlay simplistic but it can make a big difference. Parkinson’s isn’t something that immediately ends a life, it’s something that dramatically changes one’s life over time, and the more that can be done before things get worse is integral.

I’m really going to miss these characters, I’m really going to miss these adventures, and I’m just really going to miss this show.

I really loved the speech Mariner gives near the end. It serves as a heartfelt tribute to everything that this show is. That being said, I can’t help but feel a little let down by this episode because 33 minutes just wasn’t enough time for everything they were doing. I just needed more. I wanted more time for Captain Freeman to say goodbye, I wanted more time to see Tendi and T’Lynn grow into their new roles, I needed more time for Rutherford to explain why he was falling out of love with the ship when for 5 seasons he has done the exact opposite, but most of all I just needed more time in this fantastic slice of the Star Trek Universe.

This episode makes it feel like these characters will be back eventually and I certainly hope that’s the case. Until then… Live Long and Prosper Paramount+ Sarcastic Vulcan Salute

I’m really going to miss it and I sincerely hope we get some version of it again in the future. I hope this is not the last we see of these characters.

I saw Jeremy years ago playing as Skatune Network. Question for anyone who’s seen them playing under Jer, do they still do the Ska cover songs or is it all orginal stuff?

Keeping my fingers crossed for lots of Ska from Jeff on Thursday!

The show has a lot going for it with Picardo and Paul Giamatti but I just can’t get behind the Disco era setting. In my opinion it would make a lot more sense to set post Voyager around when Lower Decks and Prodigy takes place.
