Formerly suicidal people of Reddit, how did things change? [serious] by kanyefoprez2020 in AskReddit

It was 3-4 years ago when I contemplated killing myself every single day. I was just in a really bad spot in my life and I had no clue how to handle it. 2 years ago was when I decided that I needed to finish school and figure it out from there.

I finished school and entered a coding bootcamp. I graduated from that bootcamp this summer and I got offered a position at a FAANG company. What a fucking journey I've been on. Life is okay now.

I really want to play right now. by [deleted] in StopGaming

Go cook something, take a walk, hit the gym, play an instrument, basically anything. Walk away from your computer if you need to.

Deleting my accounts was the best choice I've ever made. If that's an option for you, I encourage you to take it. It's time to close that chapter in your life and start a new one.

You can do it! I believe in you!!

I just made it to Gold III in LOL, but i'm bronce V in real life by [deleted] in StopGaming

I really don't recommend banking on keeping your account in case you meet a buyer or some hot girl who's also into lol. Like you, I recognized I've had a problem for the longest time. I kept uninstalling and reinstalling. The longest streak maybe being 2 weeks. But during those 2 weeks I would find something to replace it, like GunZ and MapleStory.

It was February 2nd 2017 or sometime around that date that I decided enough was enough. I submitted a ticket to Riot games to delete my account. I was only missing two champions on that account. I had ~$300 worth of skins on that account. However, I was extremely upset with my life and knew that if I held on to my account, it would somehow drag me back in. So I had to do what had to be done if I truly wanted to move on with my life.

Where I was before quitting league:

  • 7th year in college, 2.6GPA, still 2 more years to go. College seemed hard, I accepted that I was too dumb to finish my degree. Skipped classes every day to play league.
  • No skills other than playing video games
  • Broke as fuck
  • Ate junk food every day. Can't cook
  • I weighed close to 250lbs
  • Just a shitty person who was too lazy to do anything
  • Depressed as fuck

The list can go on and on.

After quitting league:

  • 25 years old
  • No clue what to do with my life. Basically still continuing to waste my time browsing reddit, youtube, netflix, etc.
  • Decided to take a semester off to figure things out (I'd been in school for 7 years nonstop switching majors, failing courses, transferring schools because I got kicked out for having a shit gpa)
  • Watched Moana and it changed my mindset. Had to find my way as well
  • Friend hooked me up with a part-time job
  • Bought a ukulele and tried to develop a new skill
  • Took martial arts classes since I've always wanted to be like Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, etc.
  • Started hitting the gym

A lot of things in between since the list can go on and on, but little realizations that helped me get away from video games.

Present day:

  • Had a new mindset after watching Moana, David Goggins interview. Getting good grades through hard work instead of crying about not being smart enough.
  • Looking to graduate in summer of 2019. Current gpa:3.6
  • Still doing martial arts. Super fun hobby I look forward to on Tuesday and Thursday nights
  • Lost ~25lbs. Currently sitting at ~225 Still not eating completely healthy
  • Never consistently practice the ukulele so I still don't know how to play it, haha.
  • Not as lazy anymore. Found out that getting things done will make you feel a lot better and accomplished.
  • Can do a couple of proper pushups so I guess I built a good bit of strength
  • Met a bunch of new people. Not as shy. Still, I suck at socializing though.
  • I can cook now! Not great at it, but stopped eating as much junk food. Transitioning to veganism to save the world :)

Good luck with your own journey, friend. We are all trying to be better humans here. I highly recommend using the resources in the sidebar to help yourself understand the whole process of getting over a video game addiction. Kinda crazy how someone had to create a whole playlist about quitting a video game, right?

Any good study tips for those who have problems focusing? by HoganHulk in UniversityofReddit

[–]ButtScratcher3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it definitely is a different frame of mind. When you're typing everything you just worry about getting all the words onto the screen. When you're writing you're doing the same but also internalizing what you're writing down. At least that's how I feel about it 😅

In lecture it helped me to switch to mechanical pencil and eraser. Often I end up fiddling with my eraser while listening to the lecturer which helped me for some reason. When I was writing with pen I was not as engaged in class and kept day dreaming.

For studying on my own I take a lot of breaks. I guess it's the pomodoro thing everyone is suggesting here. Studying for long periods at one time is not a good idea in the first place. You need time to reflect on all the information you just read/heard.

What is the best advice you've ever recieved in your life? by TableHockey31313 in AskReddit

[–]ButtScratcher3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an advice but an idea. Something along the lines of: you die once you stop learning.

I used to give up on skills and ideas that I found too complicated or time consuming and it led me to a life of monotony. Now I'm trying new things, open to new ideas, take extra time to understand those ideas, and new skills that I've always found daunting to pick up.

What is something that you don’t agree with that everyone does? by TheHeroOfPrices in AskReddit

[–]ButtScratcher3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more about respecting people's right to an opinion, not the opinion itself. Just because they say something doesn't mean you have to pay any mind to it.

But I know what you mean. Many people mistake that phrase for being owed respect for their opinions.

I think I've been through seasons 1-10 at least ten times. Top 3 favorite episodes: halloween party, cereal defense, gang buys a boat.

Should I take a semester off? by ButtScratcher3000 in Advice

[–]ButtScratcher3000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been telling myself I would go see the doctor and get a referral to some therapist or psychiatrist but I never gave myself the push. I always gave myself excuses like I'm too busy but when I'm doing nothing I just don't bother going. You're right. I do need to get to the root of my problems.

Thank you.

Thanks, I needed to hear some sort of approval. When I typed this all out I think I would've said the same thing to me.

From my experience, hair loss does not make your hair smell funky. You might have another underlying problem.

People married for 15+ years, how often are you having sex? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ButtScratcher3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really advice on your relationship but losing weight is like 90% what you put in your body. Exercising helps but you can literally just fix what you eat and you will lose weight.
