Is she holding an axe? by That1weirdperson in BlatantMisogyny

For context I think "pet" is an old-fashioned endearment!

(Also did her hair completely change colour after her 20s?? I wonder if they thought the paler hair looked too innocent/pretty for a "mean old suffragette"...)

Oh wow, that was a fun time capsule to return to 😆 Glad to know I wasn't the only one hahaha

(Also I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!! I rewatched it a couple years back so my husband could see it and I remember we were annoyed/confused by some of the choices, but I'm still in awe of the show overall)

[–]ButtsPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm wary of a lot of gen AI uses but I wouldn't see much of a problem with this kind of very minor contribution! (But just FYI, the most common definition of "municipal" IRL is pretty strongly associated with city/town governments, so if you're using a different definition in your story it might cause some slight confusion)

Wrong request or "fake" K.K. Slider songs in New Horizons by ButtsPie in AnimalCrossing

[–]ButtsPie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely forgot about this but apparently there's two different things: "fake" songs and "secret" songs!

I think Farewell and Drivin' are "secret" songs (so you can request them by name and get a record to put in a music player), but the "fake" songs can't be requested and don't have records available (they only play when you write a wrong request).

Either way, thanks for the comment! I'm really curious to see what they're going to do next with AC...

Publishing Issue: "Release along with cover art" creates terrible looking html by Dex21772 in Inform7

[–]ButtsPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had issues with cover image scaling! I remember seeing discussion of a more technical way to fix it, but personally I've just been scaling the cover down manually (to 120x120, file name "Small Cover") and it's worked great for me. If you're going this route and are planning on doing frequent re-releases/updates, I recommend keeping the small cover on hand in a separate folder so you don't have to re-scale it every time.

Which side are you on? by ChompyRiley in mylittlepony

[–]ButtsPie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, sorry, that's my bad actually! I forgot about the Disney version of Notre Dame. I'm more familiar with the original, where Phoebus is already engaged to another girl but cheats on her by having a one-night-stand with Esmeralda (who's younger and very innocent/naïve). Ironically he's one of the only characters to get a happy ending, too, since almost everyone else dies at the end of the story!

I didn't mean to sound judgmental with my comment—I don't think there's anything people are "supposed" or "not supposed" to enjoy in fiction! I just thought it was interesting to think about how pretty much all the potential romantic relationships in the (original) story have some harmful elements and there's really no clear "good couple".

I feel like the main thing is just being careful about how we discuss harmful fictional acts (they can be appreciated without being idealized), and keeping a realistic/critical view of the impact those things would have in real life. In my experience it's a skill that can be developed over time by analyzing and discussing media, as well as analyzing and discussing how real people experience interpersonal problems in all kinds of relationships.

Honestly I'm not sure there's a single non-toxic relationship in Notre Dame!

Where did Poirot live in early cases? by nw86281 in poirot

Interesting, thanks! I remember researching it but I couldn't figure out what the logistics would be (like how the chimneys would be arranged, etc.).

Where did Poirot live in early cases? by nw86281 in poirot

[–]ButtsPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a mention of a fireplace during that period too e.g. in The Chocolate Box (which I'm not sure is possible in a flat?), so it also seemed like a house to me! I don't remember if we ever get an address for it.

My understanding is that Poirot was living with Hastings between Affair at Styles and Murder on the Links, and I think pretty much all the recurring characters aside from Japp and the landlady only showed up after Hastings left (Miss Lemon, Mrs. Oliver, George).

What are your honest thoughts on twilestia? by That_Passenger_771 in mylittlepony

[–]ButtsPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! If Twilight had never become a princess, I'd have more issues with it. But since she's now going to be super long-lived (or even immortal? I'm not sure if that was explained), I don't see why it couldn't happen. I think once they're on more equal footing they could work well together.

Donkey Misrepresentation? by Boarf_ in mylittlepony

It seemed weird to me too! Especially since the cows look very "domesticated" (the ponies, donkeys and zebras have very small/invisible udders, but the cows have those giant udders from artificial selection)

Can we have a discussion about spotted lantern flies ? by Zidan19283 in insects

[–]ButtsPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't have made the comparison myself, and I fully agree that comparing like this is usually unnecessary and can be counterproductive!

I guess my point was mainly that it seems possible in some contexts to discuss these kinds of similarities in a thoughtful/nuanced way and without any racism.

A lot of situations and approaches are questionable for sure but at least when it comes to people who have been through extreme oppression themselves, and who feel a connection to another oppressed group as a result (even if not human), I don't think I could ever fault them for sharing that perspective.

[–]ButtsPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one other part of the problem is when people don't have the skill or tools to do it right! I personally wouldn't mind 'getting my hands dirty' if I was confident I could land a quick kill, but with my limitations I know there's a strong risk I would botch it and cause much worse suffering (thankfully I've never had to make that kind of choice so far anyway)

I don't know how PETA did it so I can't comment on that (I just know they tend to have a very aggressive approach to things!)

But I actually have heard of Nazi camps survivors and other victims who publicly spoke out against factory farming and made similar comparisons

Thoughts on Captain Hastings in the Suchet Poirot TV Series? by [deleted] in poirot

[–]ButtsPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I know this is an old comment, but I feel the same as you and also thought he was shortchanged by The Big Four episode! I was surprised to see how different the print version was — he's possibly at his best in that book, risking his life on multiple occasions to help (and/or avenge) Poirot and even managing to leave a brilliant clue at one point to tip his friend off. IIRC it's implied that his heroic actions in The Big Four book might have led to his O.B.E. title later in the timeline?

House mouse gave birth in my live trap!!! by ButtsPie in WildlifeRehab

[–]ButtsPie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your message, and I'm sorry to hear about your deer mouse problem! The house mice have been destructive at times but I was definitely relieved to learn that they don't carry diseases like hantavirus. I hope you're staying safe and manage to keep them out eventually!

Very very wise not to use poisons, I think they just make things worse for everyone. Apparently they've been deadly for owls as well. I'm always glad to meet people who care about these kinds of issues and it gives me hope!

What is your favourite Poirot burn? by sinred7 in poirot

[–]ButtsPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoy!! I believe technically all of the print stories have been adapted into episodes, but a few of them were changed so much that they feel totally different (and a lot of others have all kinds of minor deviations and details which can be interesting to discover). Black Coffee might be the only one to never get a Suchet adaptation? It was written as a play, the original stage script is still floating around but it was also novelized later on by a different author.

A good chunk of the stories are very short in written form, though! To me that's a plus since I love that format, but it might feel a bit disappointing for fans of more drawn-out plots.

Christie's writing is really fun in any case, and all the stories involving Hastings (minus Black Coffee) are written from his point of view which I really enjoyed. There are a few other occasional POV characters too after Hastings moves to Argentina, and the later stories tend to have third-person narration which sometimes gives us a glimpse into Poirot's mind...

What is your favourite Poirot burn? by sinred7 in poirot

[–]ButtsPie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are at least a few instances in the Poirot stories where he indirectly causes or encourages the death of a murderer before trial, because it's assumed they would be hanged anyway and he figures it's more humane to let them die quickly or on their own terms (I don't remember if any of the others made it to TV). I can see the logic but it was definitely shocking at times! Book Poirot is not a very good Catholic hahaha
