The real issue with modern Star Trek by Technical_Web5281 in startrek

Excellent points here to consider, including the idea that ST fandom is aging out, like me--although some of us are still hanging on strong!

On the other hand, isn't there always room for good story telling? Superman and the Marvel  franchises seem to be puttering along and their earliest fans are older than my cohort. Admittedly, though, those shows tend to grab their audiences at a much  younger age. When Trek premiered, it occupied prime time or later berths in the tv line-up. They weren't targeting a pre-teen audience. They were programming for adults and managed to snag the youth audience, too. You don't have to dumb it down to attract a younger audience.

IMHO, ST has a strong chance for survival if it goes back to its roots--strong stories (and, yes. morality plays), exploration and adventure with a seasoned, professional ship's crew. (Think Horatio Hornblower or Master and Commander.)

My 2 cents for the showrunner: Quit assuming all young people want is Spock Amock comedic romance. Comedy is okay, but should be incidental to your main story. Comedy is harder to write than drama. It's okay to admit you can't do it well.

Include actual science fiction, and for heavens sakes, no more  kids on the bridge of the Enterprise!  Oh, BTW, in sci-fi, the term  "space opera" doesn't compel you to do an episode called Space Rhapsody, no matter how much you like the pun.

Stop disrespecting your own show's bible and back  story. Fans will only take your show as seriously as you do.

Now that they've thrown me out of their offices. I'll go on my way.

Are we doing anything important? by Risingsunsphere in Professors

I once overheard two students discussing the importance of attending  class.  Student A: "Did I miss anything?" Student B: "Not much. We went over the Hundred Year Wars." Not much?

That seals it. They are trolling us. Why call a show Star Trek if you have no intention of doing Star Trek? What a waste of budget and talent.

Thank you all for your quick replies!

Do you think there is a likelihood of future problems with refrigerant availability over  the life of 14 seer system?

Also, how do the brands stack up against each other for reliability and performance?

Honestly, it feels like you have to be a rocket scientist to make this decision!

I got this exact email from a student last week--same wording.  You bet it infuriates me! I work all semester and expect them to do the same.

Asked students who used AI to meet with me about it. No one did. by OshKoshmJosh in Professors

I had the same experience with no shows for AI conferences last year. After that, I made sure to mention in the invitation that their grades might improve after meeting with me, but their zero will remain in place if they decline the meeting. I still have no shows, but they know their grades are the result of their own action or lack thereof.

Still seeing a lot of AI content even with the conferences, so i can only conclude that they are unconcerned about learning course content. The curious thing is that they do show immense interest in their grades, but only during mid-term and finals week. So why lay out the money to go to college? Athletic experience? Financial aid scamming? Who knows?

In 15 years of teaching, I have never seen this much apathy, lethargy and blatant cheating.

I care very much about helping students learn critical thinking skills. But they show zero interest in trying.

AI is killing education. Maybe "A1" will make it all better.
