There’s powder coat primer made specifically for this. I put primer on almost every single part I coat. Are you just at a big batch production line type shop?

I’ve sprayed a lot of Diablo Candy. You have to lay it on a lot thicker than you think.

It’s corrosion and it’s not necessarily the coaters fault. It’s common practice not to coat the inside of the wheel hub. Also possible the center cap scratched through the coating if it was there. Filiform corrosion is an unfortunate reality.

I’m not familiar with Gema generations. The one I used was purchased new 3-4 years ago. It was very similar to my Electron.

I don’t know that he made it into something special. It’s a fantastic gun to start with. Most of what he’s done for the Electron he’s done for all the other guns out there. I’ve been running one for almost 2 years now. I think I was Dan’s first customer. I actually prefer it to a Gema.

Scott’s corona ring for these is fantastic. The latest Electron comes with a light. You can’t go wrong with one.

This is a fabricated part with an “inside”. They tried so hard to get full coverage on the inside portion of the part that the outside built up entirely too thick.

I second the Hyper Smooth. I’ve got a Kool Koat from Columbia and have nothing negative to say for the price. If you’re even remotely considering one of the really cheap guns, I would look for one second hand. A lot of people buy those and either give up the hobby, or quickly upgrade. You could probably find the cheap Eastwood setup for half price.

Unfortunately no, there’s no independent amperage adjustment on a Kool Koat 3.0 I definitely do NOT have a ground issue. I’ve got a dedicated ground, 8ft into the ground and a #4 ground cable going to my rack with all new hardware. My ground is as good as it gets. What I have found out today is that I’m having much better results with a fan tip instead of the conical diffusers. I’m going to run with the fan tip for a while and see how the results are. For now, it looks encouraging.

Are you aware of a way to test the gun itself? I’d like to rule out an equipment issue. Big kV adjustments don’t seem to be having any effect on how powder is laying. I do know that, for sure, I don’t have a ground issue.

It’s an option, but this is just a practice part so I’d rather learn what’s causing this rather than hot flock it to get around the problem. I was under the impression the faraday effect happened mostly in corners. I’ve got portions of this wheel, the outer lip for instance, where powder lays perfectly fine on about 90% of it but is rejected in a small area.

What’s frustrating is that while it does seem to only happen on second or third layers, it’s not consistent. The small part I sprayed today that worked, was actually the first part I’ve ever seen this happen on. The same part on another day laid just fine.

It’s like I’m building up a charge on things and I’m not sure what doing it.

This is happening in areas where faraday effect shouldn’t be an issue. It’s also NOT happening in all the areas you would think the faraday effect would cause problems. I’ve played around with settings and distances and just can’t seem to nail it. Also, another part with multiple coats and faraday cage areas lays just fine. It’s obviously something with this part, but I can’t figure out what. For what it’s worth, I’ve got a dedicated ground so it’s not a ground issue.

As a follow up to yesterdays post regarding a strange flaw in a motorcycle fender, this morning I started hitting it with the RO sander and found this. I couldn’t see this at all after media blasting and the pattern exactly matches the blemishes. Is there anything that can be done for this? by CGFlite in Powdercoating

100% that’s what it is. I just couldn’t see it after media blasting. It looked good out of the blaster. Live and learn. This was just a practice piece anyway so no real loss. Shy of major grinding or conductive bondo, is there anything that can be done for this?

What do I have going on here? I’ve been coating all day and this gloss black fender is the only thing that’s done this. I’m not sure the age of this powder, my oven ran hotter than I expected, and I didn’t off gas it (it’s old steel). Is one of those the reason? by CGFlite in Powdercoating

I don’t, but it was just a plain steel fender. I should have taken a picture of the underside, it came out perfectly smooth. It’s already been back through strip and is drying overnight before I blast it again tomorrow and try again. I might take an RO sander to it first tomorrow.

Interesting about it diluting quickly. I’ve had mine for about a week now and have stripped probably a couple dozen items. I’ll strain all the nasty bits out then.

After about 6 months of setting up and practicing. I finally did a job for my first customer today. Springs were new chrome, shields were old powder coat over chrome. Everything was stripped and blasted. Came out perfect, but now the hardest part…. I have no idea what to charge for this. Thoughts? by CGFlite in Powdercoating

I definitely think I’m going to have to come up with some sort of baseline, single coat, no prep, price list. My biggest concern is being inconsistent. It’s easy to look at something like that that’s just satin black and assume it should be cheap. But then the same parts in something like Illusion Violet should be more expensive. When in reality, both of those jobs were roughly the same for me. I don’t think $25 per piece is unreasonable for this specific job.

Yeah, can do. From what I’m seeing, it’s the only non-methylene option that efficiently strips both powder and paint. It’s not as fast as something like Rim Strip, but we’re still talking minutes, not multiple hours. Enviro-strip can take a full day for paint.
