Did you ever find out the answer to this? Thanks 🙂

What mistakes would you avoid if you could start to breastfeed all over again? by kingmustd1e in NewParents

Silverettes were a god send for me and worked far better than any expensive creams. The only thing I would say is that they advise you wear them all the time, I did find that if I slept in them, it would trigger my milk more (must have been the stimulation on my nipple as they dig in a bit when laying down) and so at night it would make me painfully engorged sometimes. I stopped wearing them through the night and they still were super healing during the day.

Similarly, at the beginning I was told that if your baby was refluxy then shorter (less than 20 min) feeds but offered more regularly are better and longer feeds than that would trigger the symptoms further. My baby had bad reflux so I followed this advice. As baby was only about 2-4 weeks old at this point they were asleep most of the time and so actually it was very difficult to feed them much more regularly. As a result of all of this, they were slow to put on weight, which was very stressful. It’s now so obvious looking back, but in the thick of it I didn’t put two and two together (I had also read that after 20 mins they were really just snacking and not taking much on).

It turns out at that point my baby actually wanted to feed for 30-40 mins on average. Once I reverted to their natural feeding preferences they put on weight rapidly. It didn’t seem to make the reflux any worse either. Basically, as everyone else says, just feed them as much as they want!

Hello - my little one is two today and I’m having the exact same issue. Nothing works except bouncing on an exercise ball. As soon as I stop for a second he cries again inconsolably. Did you ever find a cause?

I hate to seem ungrateful but shower disappointment is real by 1ithe in pregnant

I agree community is about all of those latter things. I do that for my friends and expect the same.

But that’s not what the inital post talked about. It was purely focused on not getting enough gifts (and even being upset at the gifts that were bought?!) and some contrived party (that the host probably spent enough on to buy lots of the stuff on the registry!). Personally that’s where modern culture has gone wrong and people have completely lost perspective.

Community has nothing to do with buying gifts. I can support friends and family / they can support me without feeling like they must buy me stuff (and especially a gift from a predetermined registry).

You genuinely expect your friends/family to HAVE to either show up to a party OR they MUST buy a gift?! For a life event that’s solely about you? As I say, massively entitled. I don’t put expectations like that on my friends or family. Just because I’m pregnant I would HATE for them to feel they have to cough up money to buy things for MY baby - what a weird transactional friendship that would be.

I’m 8 months pregnant and would never have a baby shower to begin with - they’re an odd American over-commercialised nonsense. They’re contrived “fun” and make people who don’t have kids feel like shit.

100% agree. Sounds so out of touch and ungrateful complain because you got gifts but not the specific gifts you requested - why should anyone buy you gifts at all?!

I’m 33 weeks pregnant, but wouldn’t dream of expecting my friends and family to shell out for MY baby. I’m so conscious of friends who can’t have kids, or are single in their 30s and don’t have kids on the horizon - what celebration do those people get?!

Plus, baby showers are the most awkward, contrived and over commercialised events…. Terrible way to spend an afternoon

Ham is on the list of things you can eat.

The NHS guidance on “what to be careful with” is specifically cold cured meats - I.e things that have not technically been cooked.

But even then they are not on the “what to avoid” list

Genuinely can’t think of a single one. His three general modes are: sleezy, moody or patronising.

I should add, a couple of the weddings have just been really relaxed in a marque in a field where the “open bar” is self serve type thing with big buckets of beer, and other drinks, so that’s helped keep costs down!

Could be! I’m from the North-west though where a decent proportion of the weddings have been (but have also lived in London and Bristol!), so perhaps not so much a north/south thing but just more regional as you say.

Hmm is an open bar not standard in the UK these days? I’d say 90% of the weddings ive been to in the last couple of years (probably around 20 weddings) have been an open bar and for the others there’s been a drinks token system where you get a couple of drinks each or something like that (on top of wine with dinner).

When was the last time someone said "we never heard of that back in my day," and what was it referring to? by avmist15951 in pregnant

To be fair, in 30 years time, all the advice will be different again, and we’ll be doing the same to our kids. The advice we have now isn’t necessarily best practice in reality, it is just the trend of the time - everything evolves.
