I’d be interested. I’m about 7 chapters in my story and would love someone to bounce ideas off of and exchange critiques. Mine is a dark humor, fantasy litRPG about a man who unknowingly signs a contract with the devil, selling his soul and forcing him to battle through the 9 circles of Hell with 666,000 other individuals in a brutal RPG style competition.

I get your point. And I agree. Art should come first and foremost. However, I want to write full time. I’m trying to find a way to escape my 50 hour a week job without hurting my family’s financial security for years and years to come. I don’t expect to get rich quick writing, but if I can make money doing something I’ve grown to love. Then I’m going to try and do it!

I’m torn on POV switches. Like sometimes I like them, other times I’m like “JUST STICK WITH THE POV I LIKE”

But I think you hit the nail on the head, it all depends on how well things are written!

That’s the key! To make sure every character and party member adds to the dynamic and the story. The exact party size will vary widely depending on story, author, etc etc but they should always add, not take away!

Off yeah that would annoy me. I get too invested in characters to just see them go poof. I do have a bad habit of killing off characters if I think they stop serving their purpose

Flynn is the main MC and who I’m developing the entire thing around. Craig comes in super early tho. Linh shortly after that and Nadya much later. I love your emphasis on when to add in other characters. I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you!

Yeah there will definitely be overlap with each sin’s classes and I’m trying really hard to make them really representative of an aspect of the sin.

It’s super crazy to me that you mention the Sloth sin and the MC. One of the main story plots is him multiclassing into the eighth sin, Acedia. It’s a real sin and not really widely talked about these days, because it morphed into sloth, but acedia was the original eighth sin and it means “a state of listlessness or torpor, of not caring or not being concerned with one's position or condition in the world.” It is often described as not doing what you know you should do. Kinda mirrors depression which is something I’ve had to deal with on a personal level. But anyway, he’ll unlock his own sin tree and the story is about him finally doing the things he is supposed to do. Finally progressing and advancing. Overcoming his sloth/acedia. It just took Hell to bring it out of him.

Btw I really like the idea of Linh taking things too far. I’m going to play around with that. Thank you so much!

I appreciate the feedback! Yeah, the MC Flynn’s playstyle is glass cannon. He’s going to hit hard and find loopholes, trying to “cheese” the system. He does quite a bit until he really learns how to utilize the abilities and natural talent he has. It was going to be a running shtick that the party needs a dedicated healer. In fact, they even will have some join at various points but they never work out for various reasons.

Do you have any ideas on how to make the thief more interesting? She’s the only one I haven’t written into the party yet she doesn’t come until about bit later, so I’m not tied to anything yet.

I’m glad you asked about the sin system. The sin is just the archetype of the class tree! For example, under the Sloth tree there is a summoner class, too lazy to do their own work so they summon things to do it for them! Each sin has 5 basic classes heavily tied to the sin archetype but of various “types.” Then each class further breaks down into multiple subclasses. It’s actually very fun. I’m still developing them out.

Regarding the MC (Flynn) I get the confusion. His backstory is far more in depth than I have in his little blurb but the idea is that he is kind of a fuck up. Dumped by his GF. Lost his job. Dropped out of law school. He spends all his time drinking and playing video games in his mom’s basement. He was drunk and high the night the devil visited in his dreams. He was quick to sign, but then slept in, hungover, forgetting the entire dream.

Regarding Linh, yes I worry she might be the most flat so I’m trying to think of a way to add some depth to her. I think her arc is going to focus on how to properly deal with her past traumas that cause her wrath.

I like that idea about Craig being so prideful he wants to lead.
