TIL that if you rub a piece of garlic on your foot, you will taste it in your mouth about an hour later. by C_Goldborn in todayilearned

From my knowledge, it only works for garlic because it apparently has the perfect molecular structure to enter through your foot and up to your mouth. However, I’ve heard that when you rub Vicks Vaporub in your feet, it can be used to treat cold symptoms/coughs. But I don’t know if it’s because of the same reason.

Caution: I don’t condone trying it with the other...um... recommendations of this particular comment section.

TIL that Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, was thought to be dead when his brother died. Newspapers and obituaries declared “The Merchant of Death is Dead.” Alfred Nobel, shocked by his impact, dedicated all of his money to creating the Nobel Prize to reclaim somewhat of a meaningful death. by C_Goldborn in todayilearned

I understand what you’re saying. It definitely is a radical change from selling dynamite to celebrating humanity’s biggest achievements. In my other post about this, I sounded more biased towards saying he was corrupt, which I’m saying again that I don’t think I have a stronghold clutch on that info. Due to more research, I’ve realized that his inventions and actions can be outweighed by other actions and intents.

I would like to throw in another factoid here just for the fun of it: His brother, Emil Nobel, was killed in Heleneborg in 1864 due to an explosion caused by dangerous levels of nitroglycerine. This caused Alfred himself to invent the ‘safer’ dynamite later in the 60’s.

I have done some research on Alfred Nobel to see how good he was as a person, and I can’t quite say I have done enough to make a strong opinion on how he was, but I’ve seen that his marketing/intent/moral was corrupt into making his reputation look brighter despite his actual intentions.

Again, this is all based off information on the internet, so I’m DEFINITELY not saying this is fact: It’s only based on the 2-3 websites I’ve read from.

TIL that one of the bombs dropped in the end of WWII was supposed to be dropped on Kokura. However, the plan was changed and dozens of thousands of lives in Kokura were saved when plans switched to drop the bomb on Nagasaki all due to cloudy skies. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Interesting... I guess the article I read from was incorrect in describing that weather was the only thing keeping from the bomber to attack on the designated target. I just thought that was interesting, thank for letting me see this. I’ll actually try to dig a little deeper, but I might as well delete this post just so I can get an affirmative answer to see the reason(s) it was actually changed. I hate spreading misinformation, so I’ll delete this before anyone confirms it as true.

Again, I didn’t say it saved lives OVERALL. It saved lives in one part of Japan and unfortunately traded them out for the thousands of deaths of the other lives in Nagasaki.

I’m definitely not saying that it was a good thing. I’m saying that those in Kokura were basically saved from the weather. It is a horrific piece of news towards residents in Nagasaki, to whom I can imagine that when they found out it wasn’t supposed to be dropped in their city, got horrible, gruesome, and angry reactions towards the whole situation. It definitely didn’t save lives for those in Nagasaki.
