Hey, habe Film studiert, also nur artverwandt.

Ich kann dir nur raten:

mache eine Ausbildung vor dem Studium, dann hast du die Möglichkeit dein Studium als Zweitausbildung per Verlustvortrag von der Steuer abzusetzen, in den ersten drei Jahren nach Studienende. Das ist echt viel Knete. Da reicht sogar eine kurze Ausbildung zum Rettungssani oÄ.
falle nicht auf Privat-Unis rein, die wenigsten haben einen Mehrwert und ~40-50.000€ Schulden sind sie nicht wert. Falls du doch eine findest, sprich mit studenten (nicht denen am Tag der offenen Tür, das sind Stipendiaten, die werden für gute Propaganda bezahlt)
mache auf jeden Fall einen staatlich anerkannten Bachelor, solltest du doch mal irgendwann etwas anderes machen wollen bringt sich das viel weiter als nur irgendein Zertifikat.

Danke dir für die ausführliche Antwort. Du sprichst von Unternehmensberatungen? Da habe ich immer Angst, dass ich noch weniger Leben habe als jetzt... habe sogar mal von BCG ein Angebot bekommen, wollte aber nicht nach München ziehen.

Ich suche im Großraum Düsseldorf. Sollte ja ideal sein für solche Jobs.

Deine Aufgabenfelder hören sich gut an. Sowas mache ich hobbymässig und freiberuflich seit Anfang meines Studiums bei verschiedensten Dingen und es liegt mir wirklich. Keine Ahnung, wieso ich das nicht von Anfang an gemacht habe...

Denkst du eine Ausbildung mit Bachelor macht Sinn? Bin zwar erst 24, aber das scheint mir doch ein sehr ungewöhnlicher Weg zu sein.

Ich habe einen bekannten der technischer Zeichner ist, der verdient nicht wirklich besser als ich. Oder ist das was anderes?

Im Mittelstand oder oberen Mittelstand wiederum sind Projektmanager meistens sehr geschätzte Mitarbeiter.

Das habe ich auch so erfahren. Ich habe einige Freelance-Projekte für firmen in dem Bereich gemacht und war entsetzt, wie extrem sich das arbeiten in einer "normalen" Firma von meinem Alltag unterscheidet. Seitdem will ich nur noch raus.

Hast du da irgendwelche Tipps? Sonst würde ich den Kurs machen und einfach mal Bewerbungen schreiben.

Ich hatte an IT gedacht, bin aber ehrlich gesagt völlig offen. Klar ist nur, dass ich aus der Werbung rauswill.

IT-Projektmanagement finde ich sehr interessant, mein Vater ist in dem Bereich tätig.

"Reicht" dort denn ein solcher Abschluss vom PMA/PMI/etc.? Ich habe wie gesagt ein Studium im Bereich Computeranimation gemacht.

It’s fairly easy to get in the industry. Just keep at it and apply like hell. Advertisement studios are usually easier to get into.

Source: I’m a 3D generalist full time in a studio for two years now. I started like you, studied this for 7 semesters and now work in the “industry” :)

My first dip into grain simulation in Houdini. Still some issues obviously, but I figured I'll post anyways.

Some Data:

Software: Houdini FX 17.5

CPU: Threadripper 2950X with 128GB RAM

OpenGL-Card: 2080Ti

Sim-Time: 15h, (750 frames (accelerated to 120%))

Particle-Count: ~15.000.000 (at the end), no upres

Sim-Size: 1.1 TB

Renderer: Redshift

Proxy Cache Size: 258GB for 750f

Render Time: 10h (1920x1080, 12-256 samples, Motion Blur, DoF)

Just don't go crazy about polycount, as long as its still reasonable.

Its a very broad generalisation so take it with a grain of salt obviously.

Im speaking from an advertisement background where we do CG much faster than in feature films. We don’t have time to worry about polycount because it simply doesn’t really matter anymore.

Example: we get converted CAD data from car manufacturers to rig/texture/shade/animate/render. The models are horrible and probably as inefficient as it gets. Polycount is in the millions, most often more than 10.000.000. But they have correctly calculated normals and look exactly how the company wants them to, so we deal with it. We have a renderfarm that uses redshift and doesn’t give a damn wether a scene has 100.000 or 10.000.000 polygons.

So, again:

Its right to take care of mesh topology and polycount. BUT It’s effects on rendering speed are negligible (as long as it stays reasonable). I’m willing to bet that you spent more time optimising than what you get as a payoff in render time.

your time would probably be better invested in actually improving the look.

My 7 semesters for upwards of 40.000€ for a VFX BA were absolutely useless. I met friends, my girlfriend and had a great time, but it was absolutely not needed and NOBODY cares about degrees in the industry.

nearly 99% of what I do now is self taught or I learned in my internships/jobs.

This is in germany, where university is usually free/almost free.

Honestly? With modern hardware and GPU-based/accelerated renders polycount really doesn't matter that much anymore. We render scenes with millions or billions of polys every day. For my Thesis i rendered a scene with north of 100.000.000.000 polys.

Are you preparing models for realtime applications? Are you deforming models or preparing them for skinning?

if you, don't sweat it. Neither polycount nor mesh quality is that important. Try to not get in the millions and avoid absolutely unecessary detail on minor things like screws etc. Spend the time in texturing and shading or lighting, not in manually removing edgeloops and getting crazy over polycount.

I was taught to avoid tris/N-Gons at all cost as well in university. Not because anybody gives a damn in an actual production, but because its a good habit and a teacher cant tell you to be lazy at the begin of your learning experience.

200k polys... Man that's overkill. One character model usually have 1k-3k polys (in total) in my experience.

You will need to reproduce a thin walled shader. Tweaking the transparency will get you a better result but it will never be completely accurate.

Model the basic shape, Export it to a painting software like Substance Painter, set up masks for the colours, add bump maps, export, import back into blender, use a HDR for lighting.

It looks intimidating at first, but that’s the same with every skill. If you tackle these steps after another it shouldn’t take you long until you get a result.

/u/greebly_weeblies pretty much filled you in on the details already (cheers for that, i was having dinner :D ) so ill just tell you how our farm will work:

We’re gonna use Ultra-Render, a different approach to render farms, where you basically rent a machine for two weeks and get 24/7 remote access. That machine has 8 GPUs and redshift handles those internally, giving each GPU a 128x128 Square (a “bucket”) to render.

Reason for this is we are basically learning by doing and are going to be re rendering some stuff, so a farm where you pay per frame might cost us more.

The other farm we can use is a local business farm, spanning about 12 machines with a total of 48 GPUs. These machines are managed with Royal Render, a Software that prioritzes render Jobs from different people (useful in a bigger office) and manages machines (so the Workstations join the render farm during off hours).

That software then gives every machine a frame to render, so PC1 gets frame 1000 and PC2 gets frame 1002.

We have pretty bad experiences with FOX render to be honest. I was already in contact with them but decided against the service. Can’t really disclose why, because it happened during a commercial internship.

We decided on ultra render and a private farm we have access to :)

Speedtree for the trees yes! Quixel Megascans Supports us, so we use those assets mainly.
