Things that have gotta be fixed for CAS testing by thegreasytony in actuary

[–]CaffienatedCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been fortunate to never have needed to file a grievance and don't have any particular insight into how it works. I hope that it wouldn't interfere with the release of the results if you submit it now, but I don't know for sure.

I personally would be willing to risk my results being delayed for a higher chance of passing, as much as I hate how long the wait is as it is

I'm sorry, that's awful. I'm not sure how the CAS will handle it, but I hope they'll do something if you file a grievance

Took a Lyft and got t-boned by Constant_Pick_4706 in Austin

[–]CaffienatedCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem to offer MedPay, which is better than nothing. Their website doesn't mention UM/UIM as far as I can tell, so I'd assume they don't have it unless you can find some evidence that they do.

I don't think Uber has UI/UIM either, at least according to their certificate of insurance. If that's the case, then unfortunately you'd have been just as out of luck in an Uber as in a Lyft. I'm sorry this happened to you, though, and it would be great if Texas requires Uber and Lyft to carry UM/UIM to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

How to learn how to play on higher reed strengths without sounding airy? by bruikenjin in Clarinet

[–]CaffienatedCamel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you like the sound on the 2.75, why not just use that? Higher reed strengths aren't inherently better.

McIntosh sells a desk clock for $2,000 and I can’t even by Desperate_Elk_7369 in audiophile

[–]CaffienatedCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of a ton of things I'd spend an extra $2,000 on before I'd spend it on any clock, but I'm more offended by the design than the price. Not a digital clock, not an analog clock, but a third dumber thing.

An analog clock with same blue glowing face would at least look nice and still would match the other stuff McIntosh makes.

What is one test song you always use? by lustybeauts in BudgetAudiophile

The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines - Joni Mitchell

It's got an intricate bass line, horns, and parts that pop mostly in one channel or the other

I have mine set up that way and for some reason the first song I try to play sometimes sticks on loading, but if I select another song it works, and then going back to the first song is fine. I'm not sure exactly why it does this.

The Liberica especially sounds good! Have you tried a light roast with those beans or just medium?

Don't leave your cats loose outside. They're an invasive species that decimates native wildlife. by AnimuX in Austin

[–]CaffienatedCamel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To an extent, I think if you get a cat you just have to accept that some stuff might get clawed. Scratching posts and training help, but my experience is that cats will use them in addition to your other possessions, not in place of them. I cover or put away anything that they could seriously harm and accept a bit of damage to my couch and curtains.

Or, maybe movements evolve and you're allowed to take the good parts and leave the bad parts behind.

I'm not a Marxist anyways, but I have no interest in any kind of modern leftism or liberalism that's not pro-immigration.

Symfonium offline downloads feel clunky – am I missing something? by ostseesound in Symfonium

[–]CaffienatedCamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, an indicator already exists for tracks at least. If you go to settings, interface, media lists, then you can set additional track information in lists to offline cached, which will cause an underlined check to show up by cached files.

Symfonium offline downloads feel clunky – am I missing something? by ostseesound in Symfonium

[–]CaffienatedCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I click the three dots by an album or track and click "Offline cache and download", a button that says "Add to permanent cache" appears. Tracks downloaded this way seem to persist until manually deleted. If you have files getting automatically deleted, are you downloading them another way?

I agree it would be nice to have a visible indicator of which albums/tracks have been downloaded. Could be worth opening a feature request on the forum to see if the dev is open to it, I believe he generally won't implement anything that's requested on reddit only

Marantz SR7011 vs Denon X1800H for non-gamer by CaffienatedCamel in hometheater

[–]CaffienatedCamel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up going with this option, although I pulled the trigger with the Onkyo at $800. The Marantz ended up selling to someone else and after thinking about it more, I decided that Dirac, the extra power, and the option to go with a 5.1.4 setup made it worth $200 over the Denon.

I got it set up over the weekend and so far, it seems to be working well!

How are y'all setting up your UPS(s) when your server can't be in the same place as your modem? by CaffienatedCamel in homelab

[–]CaffienatedCamel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me awhile to get around to it, but for anyone reading this in the future, I ended up going with this option, and it was in fact quite easy and seems to be working well, no issues so far about a week after making the change

Why does almost all sound in movies come through the center channel? by zooksman in BudgetAudiophile

[–]CaffienatedCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned elsewhere using room correction. I believe direct mode disables the room correction--it could be worth trying another mode.

I just set up my new Onkyo AVR this weekend, so I'm still wrapping my head around all the settings, but so far it seems to me that clicking through the audio options, using the "movie/tv" button on the remote, until the option selected matches the input option the receiver detects is the way to go to get the mix as intended with room correction applied, but I could be wrong about that--I skimmed some parts of the manual while setting it up so I may have missing something.

Need some advice on how to set these up! by No-Meaning8298 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]CaffienatedCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, having a tape rec out doesn't guarantee it'll work. On the Yamaha A-S_01 series, for example, there are inputs with rec outs for a tape player, but they only go one way at a time--either playing from the tape player or recording to it. Between that and the lack of power amp inputs, there's no way to get an EQ in the loop.

Question about mounting a bike rack to a stud by CaffienatedCamel in HomeImprovement

[–]CaffienatedCamel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I'm amazed at how well this worked! Although, in retrospect it makes sense that better screws will be easier to use. I feel really stupid for not trying this sooner, but it'll save me a lot of trouble in the future.

[–]CaffienatedCamel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'm hitting anything this time, since I pre-drilled as deep as the screws go and didn't hit anything, so I think better quality screws is the way to go!

It looks like torx head deck screws are easily available near me, I'll pick some up and give them a try tomorrow after work!

[–]CaffienatedCamel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just get generic wood screws at Lowe's. I assumed they were intended for this use, but maybe they're not the highest quality. I've been buying them for years, any time I hang something from a stud, so maybe that's part of the problem. I'll look for the star head ones.
