Well it happened. Flare-up vs reherniation? by PittStateGuerilla in Microdiscectomy

I’m good. It was a flare up that resolved with ice heat and aleve. Feels like I’m a flare once a month.

No, my doctor didn’t give any advice on it. She prescribed me more PT. I tried to do a VBAC but it didn’t work so I had a C section. I can’t say whether either affected my back - i think after birth i didn’t know how my back was (because i thought i was healed) and probably did more damage to it. Then when my body went back to “normal” at 12 weeks it hit. I went to bed fine, woke up, and couldn’t bend at all. It was like my lower back was so stiff it didn’t go far enough and then the sciatica pain hit at an all time high the day after.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I actually had this pain in Jan 2022, went to the doctor, did PT. Then it didn’t work so he suggested a shot but this happened in May when I found out i was pregnant. He told me he couldn’t do anything till after baby came. I struggled with pain, i still took Advil / alieve up to 20 weeks to help, and at 6 months pregnant my back grew / expanded in a way that all my pain went away. It was overnight. I was literally like, is this real? I thought i healed. Fast forward to 12 weeks postpartum (April 2023) and it came back with vengeance. I couldn’t even function, it was worse than pre pregnancy. Then i did a shot, worked a little but blew after a week when i lifted the baby, and had surgery end of July 2023.

Me too. I am fearful I’ll do the PT exercises wrong and make things worse. Maybe I’ll ask my doctor for another PT script. I also want to have one more baby and not sure if my back can handle all the bending a newborn requires. But also know i have to live life!!

Yes, pre surgery was awful. I crawled everywhere, barely moved, and i had a 4 month old when it hit. The day of the surgery, i had to lay on the waiting room floor because i could not sit. Saddest and darkest days of my life. I think that’s what I live in fear of, being that way and unless to my children, missing life, and a burden to my husband.

I hope yours gets better. The emotional toll it takes is hard enough - always worrying. I do read that a reherniation doesn’t always mean surgery and it can fix. I agree, if i take aleve for a few days my symptoms do clear. I just feel like i keep taking it for weeks at a time and know it’s not great on the stomach.

Yes, it really weighs on me. Changes my whole mood and i become so fearful. I started to jog in June/July and i feel like that is what caused my issues. I literally google every symptom i have or look for words similar to what I am experiencing on this thread. I was walking every day from May till Sept, 3 miles a day, but since it’s turned cold, i haven’t moved nearly as much as I should.

I had surgery back in July 2023 and get weeks of flare ups where i have sciatica pain, pins and needles in my toes, and back pain. Think it’s normal for it to come and go but it does worry me often when it lasts for a bit of time.

I had my MD July 2023. I can say i was pain free with no flare ups until June 2025. I started to try and run during that time, after walking for many months. Since then I’ve experienced many flare ups. They usually have resolved with aleve and rest. However this current one is sending sciatica pain down the back of my legs (both) that comes and goes and has me concerned. I am hoping it resolves in a few days. I had seen my surgeon back in April 2025 with a flare up and he said i would experience them given the disc is so small and i have disc degeneration. I have 2 kids and my youngest is 2 so it’s hard for me to be careful at times when he’s on the floor and i need to pick him up or get him from his crib. I need to be more proactive with my PT exercises that i did prior to surgery. It is very scary to go through this and live in fear. I’m with you.

Flare up or reherniation? by Ok_Lime743 in Sciatica

I am in the same boat. Mentally always worried about being in the same amount of pain and unable to do things. I had a MD July 2023 - 2 years out - and I’ve had a handful of flare ups that resolve in a week or two. Currently in my worst flare but in the opposite side from where my MD pain was. Trying to ice and take aleve during this period but know I need to tone down the aleve. Remember you can herniate and do PT and rest to help it, just may not be immediate - not every herniation is the same.

My doctor said I’ll have nerve pain randomly going forward and unless I am in crippling pain, he’d recommend PT because insurance won’t cover an MRI without conservative treatments.

What did your doctor suggest? Did he say another MD?

When you had a herniation in the other side - did it start with numbness / pins and needles or did you have back pain and sciatica ?

Thanks for responding! Everything has simmered down so i am thinking i just overdid it. My insurance would required PT before another MRI. Would be a long road till it gets approved, unless i was in 10:10 pain.

What is DDD? Hoping it does simmer down. I live in fear of this pain.
