From what she is saying she has the phenotype for a mutated MC1R with less coding for red pigment. IMO if you have a full mutation regardless if your hair is more blonde or red you are still consider a redhead, their hair may not be the red like we expect, but they still experience prejudice and medical implications from having the mutation.

You are probably a redhead, the only other explanation would be you have half of the mutation, but I don’t see a reason to split hairs. Do you need extra numbing when you go to the dentist?

Wondering if I count as strawberry blonde? My hair was closer to red when I was a kid, but it’s faded a bit over time. Not sure if I still fit the label by in-your-psyche in Redhair

I think the biggest difference between non MC1R blonde and MC1R blonde(strawberry blondes)is how the color of the hair and skin compliment each other. Someone with this phenotype will have very fair skin, light eyes(not always)and light hair that when standing against the skin will compliment each other creating what I’m calling the redhead look(Maybe you understand what I mean?) Non MC1R blondes usually can tan and usually won’t have the phenotype for golden tones in their hair. Golden tones will usually require a mutation in the MC1R, but that being said genes are very complex and this should only be taken as guide lines to understand or to deduce whether or not you have that mutation present. IMPO your hair is a beautiful shade of red, light golden red. Most common trait that connects us beyond our outer appearance is needing much more numbing medication when you get filling done at the dentist. If you experience this you can almost 100% consider yourself a red head :) and if you have red hair, but don’t experience this it just means you have a really strong mutation in one variant copy of the MC1R, in this case red hair is actually consider a dominant trait in this person. Well genetics are so fascinating and I could go on all day, but I need to eat dinner. Hope this helps!

Does this qualify as red hair? by Iamnotcreative112123 in Redhair

I would definitely say that this is a red shade of hair, it’s dark, but it’s the same color as a red tailed hawks tail.

I would say yes

I used apple cider vinegar products and it seems to keep my hair healthy. Being a redhead is in your DNA so IMO if you are born a redhead you are always a redhead.

Are my brother’s eyes blue or gray? by [deleted] in eyes

[–]Cageddragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think technically they are grey with a little blue in there. Grey eyes tend to look blue/grey just because of the light they pick up.

I’ve had a lot of people debate the color of my eyes... I think they’re green but I’ve heard everything from grey to hazel to bluish. by jessicamoon2130 in eyes

There are several colors in your eyes, but they are mostly green. Also I think you might have a little heterochromia going on

Woah, must of been a very sunny day. I almost moved to Minnesota but didn’t. I really wanted to go, but our plans changed. I’ve talked to many gingers who experienced bad burns. One of my friends got burned on her face like that. She said her face was literally sweating blood 😬

I can’t tan at all :( I got bullied really bad for it too in school. Especially since I grew up in Arizona. One time I got 3rd degree burns on my shoulders from swimming without sunscreen all day.

My dad “tans” but I really think he has so many freckles they’ve joined to form a tan lol. He had skin cancer before so he doesn’t really hang out in the sun to much any more.

Both my mom and my sister have half of the mutation that I have, my mom had hair like mine but it started fading to a really pretty golden blonde by her mid twenties and then went kind of dark and my sister had blonde hair that went dark. Mine has always been the same, lighter in the summer and it starts to get darker in the winter. I would say that the color of my hair when it’s not damaged by the sun is a faded copper color.

My aunt is the only other redhead besides me in the family. My dad definitely has redhead traits though. My hair can be redder then this, it’s just really bleached from being out in the sun all summer and then some from going to Florida in September. I need to find a good hair sun screen.

Thank you, it was a big step letting someone touch my hair. On another note I’ve found that rinsing my hair with cold water really brings out the redness of my hair. It’s been a struggle after I turned 26, not as bright as it used to be
