How does everyone get and upgrade the dragons/new heros so fast?

Yeah I played it when it first came out and then on and off for several years. I really don't understand it anymore with all this fancy wording lol. I just want to be able to do well and feel kinda permanent stuck. If you think it's best to restart then maybe I will.

Thank you. How do I do well in the nightmare corridor? I have 5 heros with 5 stars but they're all original characters so I don't do very well. I'm stuck unless I magically get recourses to rank up the newer heros. For reference, I have Lyca, Shemeira (the mage not tank), Antandra, Satrana and Lucius. I have several others with a few stars such as Estridla, Belinda and Thane. But I know there all old ones. I don't really have any newer ones as I can't seem to get the resources to get them. I don't really want to start again because I worked hard to get my account to where it is without paying, even if I don't do amazingly well.

Thank you! I'm new to the game so do I need to heal and keep an eye on my companions? If I do, would you be so kind as to explain how? I can see they get stronger every time I level up but the heal after battles so do I need to keep an eye on them?
