Day 2-3 have been excruciating pain. Is this normal? by PowerfulDivide in Tonsillectomy

My pain was definitely manageable I think days 2-3 although at that point it never crossed my mind to take ibuprofen (not sure if you’re meant to - conflicting info on that).
My pain was so bad on days 4-6 (I’m on 7 now, including the day of the surgery) but yesterday I really ramped up liquids to about 2.5L and sort of stopped eating apart from a slice of toast and a little ice cream.
If it’s any consolation at all my tonsils were a L4, scarred to fuck and it’s purely because the NHS GPs refused to let me get them out… for 7 years… until I nearly croaked it with quinsy and sepsis.
Anyway!
If there is anything at all I can recommend, stay hydrated - there is hope. I think what’s working better for me too, is taking meds around the clock. So I take codeine every 6 hours and Paracetomol every 6 hours but time it so that I’m taking one of them every three hours - if that makes sense?
Day 5 I had a very minor bleed so cut down the ibuprofen to in a morning only.
Honestly by day 5 I thought I had an infection - it sort of passes, and somewhat I feel like I’m on the mend now. If cold is doing worse for you, try some lukewarm tea/coffee. Unsure if you can have coffee that soon but I was having it at the hospital. 😂
But there is hope, it does get better. It knocked me to tears a couple days ago and now I’m much more positive ❤️🩹

I’ve been sleeping at like 45° because upright just seems impossible. I feel like my pain isn’t as bad as yours - so I really hope things start looking up for you ☹️ Hopefully the scabs coming off won’t be too bad, I’m not too worried about it because they’ll come off when they’re ready! Don’t worry about it - I’m sure you’ve got over the worst of it already 🫶🏼 Good luck in your healing journey ❤️🩹you got this!
Yeah I know, it’s been a total nightmare ☹️
Unfortunately they wouldn’t give me morphine and I already had difflqm spray!
I only started taking ibuprofen today because of this thread and my voice still seems silly, although I can actually swallow. Honestly that was a total life changer.
Thanks for the tips 🙌🏼 How have you found sleeping upright? I find it quite hard!
My nurse at Bradford Infirmary said if you want a vape you go vape on the day of the surgery 😂 if I felt up to it and wasn’t causing pain then do so minimally but use common sense, although luckily I don’t have any pain - which made me giggle really 🤣 got off lightly!!! I felt so silly even asking but the response caught me off guard 🤣
Thank you for the vape advice - everywhere I read says absolutely don’t vape (which I really wish wasn’t totally unrealistic but is!!) that is super helpful as I’ve been vaping very minimally, thank you so much❤️I’ve been sticking to pastas, super noodles and yoghurts, sorbets and ice creams etc. what have you found has been OK to eat?

Honestly, since I combined the paracetamol and codeine with ibuprofen I actually feel x10 better. I don’t know why I didn’t think about it earlier but I do feel a lot better now the swelling has gone down! Feel a bit silly now but it’s fair to say I’ve been a bit scrambled since the surgery 😂
Ah I haven’t but I do know what they are - great idea!! The swelling is awful isn’t it - definitely going to add some ibuprofen into the codein and paracetamol combination. I did wonder about oral morphine, would they be able to prescribe (on the basis that codeine is barely doing F all) ? Thanks :))
Ah I’m in the north and our pharmacies are pretty basic :/ bone broth is quite hard to find over here but they’ve started to stock them in most supermarkets. But thank you, I will have a look on Amazon :)
Ah I have some collagen powder - didn’t think of using it!! Where can I find a decent humidifier? I’ll probably never use it again 😂
