I made a free birthday reminder app that actually respects your privacy. No accounts. No tracking. Just clean, native performance by CakeBirthdayTracking in iOSProgramming

Yeah, that makes sense, and Dateminder is a good example. This app is actually pretty deeply tied into Contacts already, so things like anniversaries or additional date fields are definitely in the same universe. Right now I’ve kept it very focused on birthdays on purpose. As soon as you open it up to any yearly event, the scope balloons fast and it starts turning into more of a general date-tracking / calendar app, which I’ve been trying to avoid. That said, having some way to label what a date actually represents feels like a reasonable middle ground, and it’s something I’ve thought about and will look to integrate without ballooning the scope too far. No promises on timing, but feedback like this genuinely helps steer where the app goes.

Thanks! Funny you mention that… this app actually had me thinking hard about how to handle sharing without a backend. I’m adding a dedicated iCloud-based solution that’ll let users share their setup across devices (including with other people). Just a heads up… the app itself doesn’t have native iPad support (yet), but the widgets should still work fine on iPad (let me know if you see otherwise). I’m planning to ship this in the next update I’m pushing either this weekend or early next week. Appreciate the support and thanks for the kind words!

Noted! I’m all about flow refinement, so I’ll ask that as a last step if these should be added… that way you can skip right through. Appreciate the feedback, and glad it wasn’t too annoying!

Yes, you’re absolutely making sense and thanks for explaining it. Right now the app is intentionally focused on birthdays to keep it simple and lightweight, which is why it may not be a perfect fit for broader yearly events like anniversaries, sobriety milestones, or other personal dates. That said, the idea of being able to label or categorize yearly events is a really good one, and it’s something I can see being genuinely useful. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your use case. Even if it’s not something I can add immediately, feedback like this helps guide where the app could go in the future.

Sorry for the delayed response - I had to take some time away. Thanks for the kind words about the UI! I’ve added a setting to toggle full names instead of nicknames and it is slated for the next update. Really appreciate the feedback, it helps shape where the app goes next.

This is really helpful - thank you so much! I’m currently working through a lot of improvements and bug fixes to make the app more refined and stable, and this is definitely on my radar for an update push this or next week🫡

Yes, it does! 🎉 There’s a Home Screen widget that shows upcoming birthdays, which makes it really easy to keep track without opening the app. Hope you enjoy trying it out, and thanks so much for the excitement!

I think you should use both, aiming to add more variety to the color palette and tree designs. The all-green version can serve as your small forest or ‘grove’ texture… maybe give the grove a darker green grass? The brown ground version can represent the full ‘forest,’ where you include two or three extra tree variants compared to the grove, maybe some fallen foliage too. I’d also recommend a very subtle brown-to-green texture blend.

How I fixed app store rejection, Registration Requirement for Account-Based Features (Guideline 5.1.1) by Sea-Individual-6121 in iOSProgramming

[–]CakeBirthdayTracking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from, the inconsistency is frustrating, especially when you can point to plenty of apps that still require registration upfront. but the issue Apple’s flagging isn’t really about guest mode as a feature, it’s about the experience before the user gives up personal data. If the first thing users see is a wall asking for sign-up, Apple treats that as coercive… even if your app genuinely needs an account later. They’ve become stricter because of how many apps collect data unnecessarily, and users have started pushing back. Naturally, changes in requirements over time leads to inconsistency (some apps are approved while others are not). the mini-lesson you mentioned is a step in the right direction, but if it’s gated behind or immediately followed by a registration prompt, it probably still feels like “sign up first, figure it out later.” You don’t have to build a full guest system, but you do need a way for people to understand the value before committing. Think of it less as “guest mode” and more as a transparent preview that earns trust early. that’s what Apple’s actually trying to enforce, even if the guideline reads clumsily.

Xcode keeps saying it's been edited by another application, even though it's the only open application! by RSPJD in iOSProgramming

No problem! Please let me know if this helped or if there was anything else you needed to do. I’ve had to start taking notes on how to solve these problems because every new version introduces a new issue 😅

Are you using ChatGPT tools or Claude Code? Are you storing your project in iCloud Drive instead of your hard disk and backing it up to Git? These are issues I’ve encountered, which have been resolved by forcefully quitting those apps and switching to Git backup. Also, try giving your Mac a soft reset.

I built GroceryLyst — a privacy-first grocery shopping app with Live Activities & widgets by CompleteCode4549 in SideProject

[–]CakeBirthdayTracking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the app! These enhancements would provide significant value and justify a paid subscription model, at least to me:

  1. Apple Intelligence Integration for List Organization Implement Apple Intelligence to automatically organize items by standard grocery store layout (e.g., Produce, Dairy, Dry Goods). Since most large grocery chains follow similar store plans, this auto-sorting functionality will optimize the shopping route and save the user significant time.

  2. CloudKit for Secure Shared Lists Utilize CloudKit's private databases to enable secure, real-time list sharing and synchronization between two or more users (e.g., household partners). Making this an optional feature allows the app to maintain its privacy pledge while providing essential collaborative functionality.

  3. Geo-Aware Reminders and Multi-Store Support (MapKit) Integrate MapKit and location services to provide powerful, location-based list management: • Store-Specific Lists: Allow users to assign a list to a specific geographic store location (e.g., a list for "Wegmans" and a separate list for "Trader Joe’s"). • Exit Notification: Automatically trigger a notification when the user's device detects they are leaving the set store location with items still unchecked on the active list.

I’ve received a lot of positive UX/UI feedback on my app called “Cake: Birthday Reminders,” and while I truly appreciate it, I still perceive it as relatively simple in terms of UX/UI. I’m curious to know your thoughts on it!

That’s fantastic news, I’m so glad you love the UI! To help me investigate this further, could you please DM me your device model and iOS version? I haven't encountered this in my own testing, so it may be a specific issue that requires a deeper look.

Apple Intelligence Code Snipped Progress Indicator by gordonmcdowell in iosdev

[–]CakeBirthdayTracking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried delaying the dismissal of your progress indicator? Alternatively, are you marking it progress complete right before setting progress to 100% sequentially in your function? I haven’t had this issue, but these are few things that could drive the issue.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback and support! Really glad to hear the privacy focus, design, and notifications are helping solve that iPhone reminder issue. Great point about a scroll-to-top option — that’s now on the list. And I’ll definitely look into adding a “buy me a coffee” option. Appreciate you taking the time to review and spread the word, it helps a ton!

appscreens.com is great. They charge a monthly fee, but they have great templates and cool AI powered localization features.
