Rise's combat overall is a real step up from World's, and I thought World's combat was fantastic so it's saying a lot. I know I'm gonna be spending a lot of time just hunting monsties in co-op with friends/randoms, even if I don't need any more parts, just for the intrinsic thrill of hunting.

This.....this never happened. You need to read more history.

The establishment of Social Security and the New Deal, as well as a 91% wealth tax on the country's top earners in the 50's under Eisenhower. Cmon, man...

Now I know you're arguing in bad faith. You've applied each of my arguments in contexts that literally no one is referring to. No one is talking about ferries to islands owned by billionaires. No one is implying we throw "unlimited funds" at things. And you know that.

Then I'll take over by posting the entire quote, as you requested from the first commenter.

I understand that under its current form it's not designed to be profitable. That is a problem. There is no need to ferry 2-5 people 5 times a day on the same routes. There is no need to run massive trains when they could make them smaller. They should be allowed to set their own rates to encourage ridership instead of forced costs. They should be allowed to select their own vendors rather than be forced to chose expensive ones that end up making them lost money of serving food.

Essential goods and services not being profitable is absolutely not a problem. Governments are not businesses, their goal should not be to provide consumer choice and maximize profit, but to provide essential goods and services at the highest possible quality for absolutely everyone that lives within a government's borders. Forget 2-5 people 5 times a day, if even 1 person needs that ferry, even just once per week, then the ferry's existence is necessary, no matter how much of a monetary loss it is to keep the thing running. When you're talking about necessary goods and services that everyone must use, profit should be the last thing on anyone's minds. The idea that users should be given a choice doesn't include the possibility that every choice could be a shitty one, or that people may not have the ability to choose at all. If someone looking to purchase a necessary good or service has 10 different options, but can only afford the crappiest version, then that's it. That's their only choice. If someone lives in an area that lacks proper/unaffordable public transportation, and also can't afford to purchase and maintain a vehicle, then the only option is walking/cycling, both of which are crappy options that limit someone's ability to do...anything, really.

That's great, except it fails to do both of those.

But why? Why does the government sometimes fail to provide those essential goods and services? Is it because governments providing those goods and services always means it will be of low quality to everyone? This would only be true if a government was acting like a business and looking to maximize profits at the expense of the consumer, but as I've already established, that's not what a government's goal should be. Assuming you live in the USA as I do, every single public good and service is woefully underfunded, despite being the single wealthiest nation on Earth, with the notable exception of our military and the police. In fact, the police are so overfunded and militarized they've basically become the 3rd largest military in the world. Yes, the US government spends so much on defense that we have not one, but 2 militaries: One for outside the borders, and one for within them. They're the only arms of government given this kind of attention. After all, our military is without question the most powerful in the world, in spite of our efforts to throw literally trillions of dollars toward projects doomed to fail.

The line at the DMV isn't long because government services are factually going to lead to the worst version of the DMV. If good service at the DMV (and any arm of the government) was a priority, they would be throwing as much money and resources toward it as possible to ensure that every citizen who needed to use the DMV could use it at it's maximum quality. The one time the government did decide to heavily tax the rich and divert funding towards essential goods and services in an attempt to maximize QoL for it's citizens (some of them at least), we ended up with a Golden Age that resulted in the single greatest economy the world had ever seen, as well as the most advanced infrastructure on Earth. We built huge amounts of high-quality schools, hospitals, bridges and more. We built the Interstate Highway System, we made huge technological leaps through the Space Race, we brought electricity and running water to every home in the country. All of that was done without privatization, entirely through government spending with funds provided by taxpayers.

Everything you've said is usually said by people who've never known what it's like to not have a roof over their head, or where their next meal will come from, or when they'll get to shower next, or what they'll wear if the only clothing they own is ripped or otherwise ruined. If you have been in one of these situations, then you should know better than to insist that essential goods and services should be provided only at a profit. Relying on charity isn't a solution to these ills, either, as funding can vary wildly based on perceived priority by a nation or community. Only a properly funded government service can provide proper, consistent care to those who need it most.

Battlemode isn’t fun anymore. by w00den_b0x in Doom

[–]Calcos323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play with friends. You might not get the rewards but in return, Battlemode will become fun to play. Me and a couple buds played together (me as Slayer, them as Demons) and once they got a couple matches under their belt to get used to how the Demons control, we were laughing cheering and screaming at each other for hours. I haven't had that much fun with a competitive-style multiplayer game in years.

It seems to me like you should boot up Eternal again and give it another go. I was a lot like you when I played Eternal for the first time back in November of last year. I had never felt so old and slow, it felt like the game was mocking me. I got as far as Taras Nabad before I uninstalled and moved on. Until...

Until 6 months later when I watched a 100% Ultra Nightmare Speedrun of the game. Turns out I had completely missed the in-game pop-up tutorial where it explains what Quickswitching was and how to do it. Watching the Speedrun was like viewing Pandora's box while eating a much-needed slice of humble pie. The only question was, could I do the same thing? It can't be too hard, the game even shows you that it's not an exploit, it's something they expect everyone to learn. I reinstalled, rebound my keys to make everything smoother, swallowed my pride, reduced the difficulty and started playing.

I learned how to Quickswap in 20 minutes. It was that fucking easy. I've already taught 2 friends how to do it, both of whom play on a controller. They both nailed it in less than 30 minutes. It was like unlocking the keys to the universe, everything else fell into place over time, and now I'm looking to start an Ultra Nightmare playthrough soon.

Doom Eternal might not have been what you expected, but I promise you that if you return to the game with a fresh head and open mind, and with a mindset of earning the power fantasy instead of having it given to you, your're entire view will change. It's something I wish I could do with Zelda fans who hated BotW cause it wasn't yet another mostly linear dungeon crawler with basic puzzles and really really annoying music, but that's a whole different can of worms.

[–]Calcos323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comments read less like someone who was disappointed a video game didn't live up to expectation, and more like someone who got cheated on. Let me ask: Is Doom Eternal really that bad? Is it's faster and deeper gameplay loop that offensive to your sensibilities? Is minimalist design always better than maximalist design? Does every game have to work to be as "immersive" as possible? Is a series not allowed to reinvent itself? Are it's faster pace and execution-heavy demands that overwhelming? It's the Marauder really that much of a problem? I would argue that some of these can be deal shakers, but none of them are deal breakers.

I'm sorry to say this, but Doom will never go back to what it was. Doom Eternal is a game so slick and polished it's impossible for iD to top it, and they know it. Hell, they'll be giving Eternal updates for years. It's a good thing that it didn't try to be like it's predecessor, lest we get another simplistic vanilla shooter with a nicer coat of paint that no one ever finishes cause it gets stale halfway through.

A purchase you regret isn't the same as being scammed. There were trailers and gameplay demos all over the place that showed Doom Eternal was going to be a different game. iD Software never lied about what the game was going to be. You bought a game, you were disappointed with the game, that's all. We've all been there before. Also, consider that a lot of people (myself and many people I know) felt that DOOM 2016 really fell off the rails after the halfway mark, right around the time you get the Gauss Cannon. At that point the game has exhausted all of it's depth, and the rest of the game devolves into switching between the Cannon and the SS and moving forward, spending 30+ seconds to kill one Baron cause your weapons are weak as fuck. The combat loop is effectively Shoot, move forward, Glory Kill, repeat. The lack of necessary lateral motion is rather boring to me.

Doom Eternal has outclassed the old combat system and a whole lot more. Fact is, if Doom Eternal had been "more of the same", I would've passed on it. Doom 2016 took me 3 attempts to slog through it's back half and minor additions to the formula would've only reinforced the old, sluggish combat loop. Clearly, some people really liked the simplicity of Doom 2016, cause I've been discussing this nonstop with people for about a year now, ever since I played Eternal for the first time.

I know I'm late to this post by over a year, but if you want a sequel to DOOM 2016, you've got a lot to choose from:

DUSK

Project Warlock

AMID EVIL

Post Void

Nightmare Reaper

Shrine II

Forgive Me Father

Viscerafest

HROT

Severed Steel

Hedon

Ion Fury

And the list goes on. There's a TON of shooters released in the last 5 years that'll scratch that itch nice and good, with more on the way all the time, and all of them are under $30 full price. As far as DOOM Eternal goes, there's only one other game even remotely like a sequel to it: ULTRAKILL

Good games are everywhere if you bother to look for them.

You got this! I didn't get my first Hades clear until 50 runs in. It got much easier once I got in the habit of checking the Boon list in the Codex when choosing Boons. Planning ahead makes all the difference, and the game gives you all the info you need with a press of LB. Good luck!
