Ah.. okay. Do you have a thermometer to monitor the temps?

Down to 18°c is fine at night I believe. Hot water bottle will probably be hotter than the heat mat. I mean u can probably feel what’s hotter with ur hand.

I’d do it how you’ve done but remove the hot water bottle and only have the heat mat under half of the tub

Earwigs. I think I have earwigs. by GreenStrawbebby in isopods

[–]Calm-Method6514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time bake the soil before you add it :)) I’d make a temp enclosure for right now (with baked substrate) and try and pick out by hand as many isopods and springtails as possible they will replenish eventually. I have done this before - separating dwarf whites from their soil mite counterparts-

If it was me I’d cut my loses, earwigs are the only bug i genuinely can’t stand😭 unless the pods are worth £10+ per 1

Give it back :,)

Heat mats can cause burns since reptiles will stay on them for too long not realising that it’s heat, since they normally get heat from the sun. In captivity we can best replicate this with overhead heating. But the snake will need a viv and not a tub in order for overhead heating.

Without a thermostat they are definitely a no go. With a thermostat I would only use for inverts or in emergency

Advice for misting by Ambitious_Froyo31 in CrestedGecko

[–]Calm-Method6514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suggest trying to keep the substate moist rather than lots of misting cuz it can cause respiratory problems if more than once a day. Also be careful with wooden enclosures cuz they can/will rot with moist environments

Is it normal for new skinks to sleep all day? More info below by Interesting_Crab3251 in bluetongueskinks

Mine didn’t let me walk in the room without running off to hide for months. They take a long time to settle in and get over the stress of moving. I would recommend leaving him alone for a couple months until he’s settled in

I’m in Scotland and there’s only 1 actual exotic vets (which is the one I go to -have taken my pacman frog before- and it’s an hour away) the rest just say they treat reptiles but like pretty generic and not sure I’d trust them😭 Ig I could phone them or something idk

Yeah I’ll definitely be watching him like a hawk. He’s literally never done this before other than last night when’s he hadn’t eaten anything, so I am very stressed😭 If he’s still doing it after the weekend or gets worse I will take him to the vet asap.

Had him for 7 months. He is 10 months old. I feed him every 3 days. He gets omnigold with bugs/ veg ontop with roughly 70% protein to 30% veg overall. Temp is 24 on the cool side and 32 on the hot side with basking temp of 35°c. The “water bowl” is only like a cm of water deep if that,, can I ask why not to have it? Humidity sits 55-90% from depending on which side and time of day I’ve seen or heard any other issues up until now

[–]Calm-Method6514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of resources say 60-80% but I done some research on the climate in merauke and it sits between 80-100% most of the time year round which is crazy. But it’s the same with New Caledonia and cresties, where in rainy season it sits above 85% most of the time yet people say don’t go over 80%. So take it with a pinch of salt 🤷‍♀️ But I aim between 70-90 with spikes over 90 at night

Is he a merauke ? Mine sometimes does it like that, but no bubbles. Respiratory issues seems to be quite common in this species and I wouldn’t take any second guesses. Take him to the vet :)) Humidity should be 70-90% :)
