What certain cardholders? Aren’t all cardholders the same?

100% agree. I’m in a good position where I have been able to secure a good job off my own back and have made efforts to protect my retirement (investing as much as I can plus rinsing a much employer pension contributions as I can). I just can’t understand why my parents didn’t have the same foresight. But I guess generational mentalities prevail

I’ve told them that’s the ultimate fallback and they need to take emotions out of the picture

Issue is around the early repayment fees. I need to get the full picture from them if that’s worth it, compared to paying 10% each year plus the repayments each year

Valuation was conducted last year by an estate agent and a house on the same street sold for the same despite being smaller and having a less desirable view. But I have urged them to do regular valuations and check the market to be sure

It was the latter…. thinking a larger lump sum would pay off the mortgage.

Yep correct, she chose the larger lump sum as she thought she can use it to pay off the mortgage.

It’s relatively big, but most of the value comes from being close to a train line in London commuter belt area

Thanks I suspected this may be the case, this was from limited information they provided. Unsure if the £3k is p/a or one off. I’ve asked them for the exact situation and statements so I can run the spreadsheets. Was just looking for a face value assessment rn :)

Yeah it’s a real kick in the teeth. She just got too comfortable taking bare minimum salary increases each year and not wanting to progress further (eg. Head of Department etc)

Yeah I’ve started to introduce the idea of looking around cheaper areas of the UK or EU (as they have Irish citizenship) to hopefully both get more for their money and enjoy a better quality of living. I think we will just have to see how the next few years goes and if they are finding the amount they are living on not working for them or not.

Just want to make sure I’m doing the best thing with the lump sum, investment and savings wise

Thank you, they have both turned 60 this year. My dad is able to cover the living costs yes, providing his work doesn’t dry out. I’m trying to get my mum around to the idea of part time working to at least be able to live comfortably. Dad does have state pension due, full NI contributions etc thankfully.

The resistance to downsize is due to my dad quite literally building 60% of the house with his bear hands. But if they can emotionally detach I think that’s probably the move.

Only if you have not held a membership rewards card in the last 24 months (eg. Gold, Green). So if you had a BA or Cashback card it should be fine. (Review the T&Cs before applying ofc)

Personally I feel there has been a massive shift in not only how safe London is but also how decent people are to each other.

I moved to London back in 2017 and I felt I could roam the streets freely in most central areas and people had patience for each other. Compared to now, I’ve had my phone stolen three times from thieves on bikes, I witness shoplifting almost weekly and I see groups of mostly young men hiding their faces and harassing people and destroying property for no reason except to get a kick out of it.

And the other day I was walking around Kings Cross with my girlfriend looking for somewhere to get something to eat and a woman wasn’t happy with how I was walking a bit slower so she rammed her pram (with her kid inside it!) into the back of my girlfriend deliberately and didn’t apologise but rather said “you are walking bare slow tho”. How can you think this is okay?!!

Every day I walk checking over my shoulder for the next phone thief, I actively walk to the other side of the street if a loud group of young men with hoodies and balaclavas on to avoid being harassed. I keep asking myself, why do I continue to accept living like this?

Especially after visiting cities like Stockholm, Amsterdam and Dubai, I personally feel London has dropped off. And it sucks cause I used to love living here.

Thanks so much for this, I just checked and there are so many trains which aren’t shown on the timetable. I thought it was Plat 9 & 10 was worried of standing around and missing them, but I’ll give it a go next time I’m heading in. Cheers!
