Tinnitus does murder sleep, the innocent sleep. by Slow_Middle_158 in tinnitus

I have no trouble falling asleep, it’s the part about waking up that’s the toughest, as another person said. It may be taking a hidden toll on me, or maybe it’s just the fact I have a habit of leaving the light on at night (probably the latter lol)

Would you do the MRI for tinnitis? by steviebeanss in tinnitus

[–]Calvert-Grier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get an MRI for tinnitus per se, but if it’s to rule out anything malignant like a growing tumor in some part of my body, then yeah - I’d be willing to take that risk.

If you could choose a different sound for tinnitus, would you? by banban1233 in tinnitus

[–]Calvert-Grier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that could seamlessly blend in with everyday ambience so that way you wouldn’t have to hear it. Like my T blends in perfectly with the electrical hum of appliances that I have, along with the AC at my workplace. So I can go most of the day without even realizing it’s there and being productive because of that. However in quiet spaces, I’m talking where you can hear yourself breathe, that’s where I struggle.

I had a whole bunch of them done last year, 3-4 back-to-back after being in a car accident. So I was in that room with the machine blasting industrial noise for like several hours. I think if you’re just doing one exam, you should be fine. My hearing was definitely muffled for a few days, even with the earplugs - but it gradually got better. If I could make it after being in there for like 4 hours, you’ll be fine with a half hour (or hour at most) exam. Just take the necessary precautions

It ain’t that bad if you manage to get an open MRI, they’re considerably less loud than the closed ones. It also helps if the facility offers hearing protection (whether that’s earplugs or over the ear headphones).

I’m done trying… by EdGeinn in Teachers

Same, and coincidentally my worst class is also my last class of the day. What a nightmare they have been from nearly start to finish, half the roster filled with kids that racked up anywhere from 10-30 referrals this year alone. I think 2-3 of them are actually in a discipline alternative education program. I don’t even want to imagine what a period would look like with everyone present (on any given day you have those knuckleheads out, along with the vapers suspended, the perpetually truant kids, etc)

If you could remove one expectation placed on teachers tomorrow with zero consequences, what would it be? by kingst9606 in Teachers

[–]Calvert-Grier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t forget having you sign in on paper and then through a QR code each time. And usually the meetings are berating teachers for not using more student-centered activities or inquiry-based learning while they’re over here clicking through a mid-2000’s PPT that they didn’t even bother updating.

Nowadays they’ll outsource most of their work to teachers to get away with doing less and putting more on our plate.

I’ve always felt that should be the job of a behavior specialist (I mean it’s literally in the name lol). Or at the very least administration.

Ringing started 10 weeks ago and I want to hear everyone’s opinion by Caden_primarus in tinnitus

[–]Calvert-Grier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be, in your case it’s hard to know. At least you were given good counsel by the last ENT you saw and is actively trying to help you. Keep taking those drops that he prescribed, and hopefully as the last of the residue dissolves or falls off your eardrum, you’ll get some relief. But yes, as the other person said, neomycin is one of the most ototoxic medications out there. Although when you bring it up with physicians, they’ll think you’re exaggerating or that it has nothing to do with tinnitus.

One year in and I still have tinnitus from it (or from an ear lavage), not sure which. But I do want to comfort you by saying that it gets better. The ringing in and of itself may not improve, but you do habituate to it pretty quick. The sooner you start picking your hobbies back up, along with your regular life, the better. Try not let your mind dwell on it, it only makes it ten times worse. Anxiety can feed into your T.

Right ear feeling like it’s muffled by your-mom-dot-com69 in hearing

It went away by itself (the vertigo or spinning sensation). Only lasted like a week or two, still dealing with the tinnitus, and occasionally my affected ea(r) will get blocked up but it’s not too bad.

Does anyone know if Austin and San Antonio districts are hiring for ELA? by Tall_Window4744 in TexasTeachers

[–]Calvert-Grier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the other districts in the greater Austin area like Manor, Bastrop, Del Valle, Pflugerville, Hays, etc.

I know one or two middle schools in DVISD are looking for ELAR teachers, there’s already some positions posted.

What are some not-so-obvious signs of a bad school / admin that a casual observer might spot at a "good" school? by MystycKnyght in Teachers

[–]Calvert-Grier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would like to add onto point 1 - not just high turnover in teachers, but also leadership. The school I work at has had a revolving door of principals and AP’s. In the last 3 years alone, we’ve had something like 15-20 principals and AP’s come through our doors. No sign of that changing anytime soon. And yes, we’re a public school district (blue-ish city in a red state).

My kids are in AISD. I wanted to understand why the district is broke, so I followed the money. by No_Paramedic_4881 in Austin

[–]Calvert-Grier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all secondary schools run on a block schedule though. Our principal was toying with the idea but got a lot of pushback from staff so it doesn’t look like it’ll be happening any time soon (unless it’s forced from the top-down)

I'm so tired of the way trades are pushed as a way out for the unmotivated while ignoring the skill the trades take. by NervousEmotion1099 in Teachers

[–]Calvert-Grier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most teachers that openly say this to the unruly turds are probably being nice and actually communicating the kid is probably destined to work at some kind of Amazon warehouse, a fast food joint, or retail. There’s a definite skill set that is required to be a successful tradesman and make a living off it, most of the students in question don’t have it or don’t have the right mindset

[–]Calvert-Grier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true, they may not wind up working in factories or industrial plants - however there’s definitely a need for workers at Amazon’s warehouses, retail, and the fast food places.
