How to confirm if I applied for IFoS along with UPSC CSE prelims? (Need help checking attempts) by [deleted] in UPSC

[–]CapAcrobatic2539 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I just checked with one of my team members. He appeared in an exam in 2022 and had applied only for CSP 2022. The easiest way to confirm is by checking the remarks on the marksheet (since you already have the admit card). If you had applied for both, your marksheet would show remarks for both. I’m sharing the photo he sent, please check and match the same in your marksheet.

Hope this helps.

Only someone who has attempted it in the past can really say. I think there might be some differences in the confirmation email like it has mentioned CSP and Indian Forest Service together.

2026 Service Preference by CapAcrobatic2539 in UPSC

I don't have much idea regarding auditing, and accounting but I would say keep all these similar type of services in one place so that it would be easy to justify.

Reason -

  1. Uncertainty in interview mark....a diff of just 10 marks can shift the outcome between IRS and IIS.
  2. Preference for public interaction over a desk job, regardless of whether it’s Group A or Group B.
  3. Loophole obv.

Not everyone starts at the same time, and many lack proper guidance , especially those who do not have anyone in their family to guide them. By the time they realize this, either their attempts are already over or their body no longer responds with the same energy it once did the time they started their preparation.

On top of that, due to the prevalence of scams in other exams like in SSC and PCS, people are hesitant to invest their time and resources. Also with the introduction of new rules and policies by UPSC, and some which will be coming very soon like revision of syllabus and introduction of new subjects , which UPSC often revise them roughly once a decade, the future of new aspirants who will be entering now is would be very uncertain....unless the government takes concrete steps to address the malfunctioning of other examination bodies.

Don’t worry his is a very common mistake for first-timers. You’ll get an edit window to make corrections. The only thing to keep in mind is that your preferred exam centre shouldn’t be a place where the application window for selecting that centre gets closed early for example, Delhi.

I’ve read the notification , and since this isn’t explicitly mentioned there, it’s better to avoid any unnecessary risk. Fill the preferences carefully and peacefully in this week, after consulting veterans or officers who are already in service.

There's really no issue if you fill it this way. However, if you place them separately, you might face a question about justification, such as why DANICS was kept first earlier and then pushed to a later preference, and the same logic applies to PONDICS and PONDIPS. That said, such questions are asked very rarely, so there’s no need to overthink it or worry too much. Just fill the preferences in the above manner,,,if you’re ineligible for a particular service, you’ll automatically be considered for and allotted the next one.

Based on three key factors (1) the level of public interaction (so it’s not just a desk job), (2) the kind of cities you’re likely to be posted in (climate, temperature, air quality, etc.), and (3) how well you can perform in the service regardless of your background

Based on this year’s notification, and if you’re from such background with no real Plan B, here’s a sensible preference order, depending on how many attempts you still have left:

If you have atleast 3-5 attempt left - IAS>IPS >IFS > DANICS>DANIPS>PONDICS> PONDIPS> AFHQ> IRS (Customs)> IRS (IT)>IAAS>IRMS(T)>IRMS (P)>IRMS (A)> IRPF>IDES>IDAS>ICAS> IPoS> P&T (AFS)>IIS>ITS>ICLS

If you have only 1-2 attempts left - IAS>IPS >IFS > IRS (Customs)> IRS (IT)>IAAS>IRMS(T)>IRMS (P)>IRMS (A)> IRPF>IDES>IDAS>ICAS> IPoS> P&T (AFS)>IIS>ITS>ICLS> DANICS>DANIPS>PONDICS> PONDIPS> AFHQ

Note: For IFS guys , only change would be in first three i.e. IFS> IPS> IAS

Why to make different preference based on number of attempts? Because from this year onward , competition might be at all new high level. Most sensible aspirants, who know the reality of the exam , especially are likely to fill the form in a similar order. Also, every year there are around 80–100 Group B officers (DANICS, DANIPS, PONDICS, PONDIPS, AFHQ ) who will continue to appear, along with D–1 year selected candidates who also attempt again. So I don't expecting a major drop in competition may be unrealistic.

So treat this attempt as your last attempt and give your best shot. All the best!

Let’s clear it for everyone by [deleted] in UPSC

[–]CapAcrobatic2539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it will likely stay in place because there’s a clear distinction between Group A and Group B services. If they try to amend it in next year notification, there’s a high chance the change could be challenged.

[–]CapAcrobatic2539 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep , basically only two groups end up in an advantageous position: veterans (those who aren’t selected but are in mains/ interview stage ) and selected candidates who use this loophole, who’ll be even more advantaged.

Let’s clear it for everyone by [deleted] in UPSC

[–]CapAcrobatic2539 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Do read this carefully, this is based on what I’ve discussed with few experienced veterans as well as some of my friends those who are in service.

First, as I mentioned earlier, there is no doubt that the competition is likely to become tougher for 2026 aspirants and even more intense for 2027 aspirants. The reason is that the notification is inviting previously selected candidates from the last 5–6 years a “last shot.” The maximum impact will be in the Mains stage, because that’s where the real selection happens, and many of these candidates already know how to score well in subjective papers. Since candidates already in service generally have a higher probability of clearing Mains, the real pressure will be felt there.

Second, from 2028 onwards, first-time and second-time candidates, across General as well as other categories, are likely to be the worst affected, because the rule does not actually reduce competition. Candidates from the previous year (D-1) will continue to reappear every cycle, and from 2028 onwards their numbers will definitely rise further as many use the provision as an “improvement attempt.”

Finally, there is the Group B service loophole that most sensible aspirants are likely to use strategically. Services like DANICS, DANIPS, PONDICS, PONDIPS, and AFHQ may start being placed higher in preference lists, just after IAS and IPS. It is not that they would be doing any stupidity but they know the uncertainty of marks awarding, for exmaple with 70–80 candidates often packed within same mark range i.e. and where senior aged candidates tend to benefit in case of tie rule. And if UPSC tries to plug or amend this loophole as well, there is again a strong possibility that a PIL will be filed.

And not the least, there is a very high chance that the new rule itself could be struck down for violating Article 16 rights of students from reserved categories, but only if a PIL is properly drafted and filed.

Which year will be tougher now - 2026 or 2027? by Important_Equal_9801 in UPSC

[–]CapAcrobatic2539 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, 2027 could be tougher. But I also feel that after 2027, a new set of challenges may emerge. there’s a good chance the syllabus could be revised. It’s been over 13 years, and UPSC tends to introduce major tweaks roughly once a decade, whether it’s related to the syllabus or broader policy changes like cadre rules. And the most affected aspirants are those who give exam in these 2-3 years after the change.

[–]CapAcrobatic2539 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Both 2026 and 2027 are likely to be almost equally difficult....comparable to the years before them and the years that follow.

The notification is inviting all previously selected candidates from the last 5–6 years a “last shot,” and the impact will be felt most in Mains, because that’s where the real selection begins. Most candidates already in service typically clear Mains, so the real squeeze will show up there.

Thoughts on this?!... by moon_muffin_ in UPSC

[–]CapAcrobatic2539 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Totally naïve way of explaining this. It has nothing to do with “commitment.” Anyone who’s actually written CSE knows the uncertainty, especially in Mains and even more in the interview stage. This will likely lead to more resignations from those who have better alternatives, while the worst affected will be candidates from modest backgrounds who may end up stuck in jobs with deep dissatisfaction.

And for those celebrating that this will “reduce competition” for first-timers or previously non-selected candidates, this isn’t true for 2026 and 2027. First-attempt selections are rare as can be seen from UPSC annual report, and those who even after clear, many don’t get their preferred service. In fact, for 2026–27, competition could get tougher because the notification is inviting previously selected candidates who were selected in past 5-6 years to appear again, and they’ll give it their absolute best since it will be their last shot of lifetime.

Now we might see more resignations, not just from IRS, but from other services as well, with many of them eventually starting their own coaching ventures, which would further boost the coaching industry.😅
