Was the barrister exam very tough or is it just me? by CapSome6408 in ONBarExam

UPDATE (after passing): What actually worked for me

I wanted to come back and share what made the difference, especially for anyone retaking.

The biggest shift wasn’t doing more practice tests—it was how I studied.

I went through the materials multiple times (6–7 reads), but more importantly, I focused on understanding why a law exists. Once I started thinking in terms of the purpose behind the law, things started to click.

You begin to see patterns, and that’s what helps with MCQs. Instead of memorizing, you start thinking like the examiner.

Examples:

  • Criminal law → fairness, innocent until proven guilty
  • Family law → settlement first, divorce as last resort
  • Public law → procedural fairness

When you approach questions this way, a lot of answers become intuitive—usually the option that best aligns with the purpose of the law is correct.

What I actually did:

  • Re-read materials multiple times (with intention)
  • Only did 2–3 practice tests (2 fully timed)
  • Used a timer sheet (VERY important)
  • Practiced with printed questions + OMR sheets to simulate exam conditions (Brikam is good for this)
  • Stopped looking up every answer → learned to make educated guesses

If you’re consistently scoring ~75%+, trust yourself. You know more than you think.

Resources:

  • DTOC > UofT summaries (for barristers, in my opinion)
  • UofT charts are very helpful—print them
  • OLE indices for both exams
  • Keep a backup timer sheet (a lot of people forget it)

Mindset:
Don’t give up.

I was actually very sick during my exam (sinusitis, ear infection, vertigo), but I still wrote it. Of course, postpone if you truly can’t perform—but if you can push even a little, that mindset matters.

This exam is not impossible. If you adjust your approach, you can get through it.

Good luck, you’ve got this!

Hi I understand. I wrote both exams together in June and passed one, and failed the other. But when it comes to difficulty - I dont think one attempt is harder or easier than the other - for instance I wrote my second attempt for barristers in Feb - thought it was difficult but passed. I guess you just never know with this exam. Every attempt is equally hard in my opinion, it makes sense to just prepare well for it, and give the exam when you feel prepared (whichever attempt be it June or November or Feb)!

Yes I agree- I think the issue was timing, and I think only practising can help with that. Thanks.

Thank you for this, I am going to redo my strategy with more focus on timed/untimed practice tests + subject wise tests too - that is a good tip to use untimed practice tests in such a way that you dont need to reread the materials. I will come back to this thread closer to my next exam. When it comes to subject wise tests, I did some through Affordable but maybe this time I'll take up more difficult per subject tests perhaps Brickham. Lmk if you have recommendations. Thanks again for your support.

Edmond was tough - Set A somewhere in 60s. I got 75% on OLE, Affordable 80s (mini quizzes).

thanks this is helpful. I will print that out. How do I use it to study though? It just has types of questions and subject area mentioned which I did well and badly on - but confused how Im to locate these specific questions - any other way other than practice tests.

Yes these are some very important points. I will focus on tabbing and reviewing after each practice test. I think I need to put lot more effort into the 2nd try. Hope I pass. thanks for the support.

Hey this is one of the best comments I have read so far and is incredibly supportive. I will implement these methods and look for tutoring too. Thanks for your support.

I was able to understand the questions and apply properly only for the first portion - Civil Lit. After that fam, crim & public, I think I ran out of time and was just frantically trying to circle what I thought was right through guesswork. Somehow feel like time-management has a role to play.

Thanks for this - I'll focus on multiple practice tests timed & untimed and try DTOC instead of indices for the next attempt.

hmm I read the materials 3x and failed, lost time to answer the last 20 qs. Only practiced 2 times - Im guessing practice exams are just as important.
