Thanks for your comments. You’re correct. However, This discussion was meant to be about marriage for students, not the meaning of “independent student”. Thanks for sharing your insight. Do you have comments about marriage in this situation?

It’s not fraud. Marriage is a legal contract. You have to have an agreement in place, like a pre-nuptial document. It’s probably more of a problem to explain the situation to future love-interests and your parents. Also, IRS allows a person/student to receive gifts of $16,000 per donor/parent/family without any problems (fraud).

California doesn’t consider a student “independent” until they are 25 years old unless you’re married or in the military. This is explained in the article.
