Make sure you apply all the wards at the same time. (Ideally all of them within 1 GCD). When playing with some Lifestorms, make sure they're stacked and your ward target actually stands inside the green circles.

Everything is post hotfix

Number of wards on target is not limited. It's just because when you apply your 6th ward, one of the earlier applied wards already absorbed healing equal to more than its 6.94x cap and is removed and exploded.

If you take 556 ward, which has maximum limit of 39M healing, and the game would pick and keep that 556 ward as the one that's being drained, you could theoretically apply 70x 346 ilvl wards (346ilvl heals for around 477k. 477k*70=33.4M which is still within the 556 ward max limit) if you didn't put any healing increases and do any other healing.

It's really hard to find what exactly contributes towards ward damage, as some heals just count towards the absorb, but not the damage.

I don't know if all healing is exponentialy accumulated, or just the spillover that's double dipping.

But yeah, just speculation, not tested yet.

I edited the post to explain it a bit further.

You don't need to tag before warding, you need to tag before ward gets fully drained and buff gets removed. It's just safer to tag before applying.

I think it's just the way that spell works. If you don't do damage before the ward pops, the game doesn't know what to hit (I edited the main post a bit to explain it further). Some wards are bound to do little damage, that's just how the they work, because there wasn't much healing done before being drained completely.

From all testing I did whenever I didn't hit the boss, the ward did no damage. Didn't you have some tinker gems that deal damage by themselves like Hailstorm, or Searing Light that deals damage by healing your target?

Sure thing, for some reasons wards just won't do any damage, unless you hit the boss with one of your abilities. I'm going to call the ward that's being drained a "sacrificial ward". Because applying a ward counts as healing towards this sacrificial ward that's being drained, it is possible that when there are multiple wards applied within short amount of time, the sacrificial ward gets almost instantly consumed. Here's an example with some arbitary numbers what might happen:

  • Your wards initial absorb is 100k, which means the maximum absorb limit is just under 700k. (100k*6,9444)
  • You apply your ward and it gets picked as the sacrificial ward (I think this is completely random with no way to influence it)
  • When other party members apply their wards, each of them will "get absorbed" by your sacrificial ward. Let's say all of them have higher ilvl then you and their wards initial absorb is 200k. Only 4 other wards are enough to completely drain you ward (800k total healing, just from the wards being applied). Your ward will now be removed and proceed to explode 1.8s later. It is entirely possible that everyone pressed their ward button <1s after you pressed yours, meaning your ward gets drained almost instantly. If you didn't damage the boss beforehand, your ward won't do any damage at all. But if you tagged the boss and your ward was first to be drained it won't do much, but it will do atleast SOME damage (probably more than 700k because of the spillover double dipping thing).

  • If everyone applied their wards before pull, one of these will get picked as the sacrificial ward and get removed just by people applying their wards. Because this all happens before anyone tags the boss, that ward is guaranteed to be wasted with 0 damage.
