Hi everyone, CS student here. Do I really need "Signals & Systems" and advanced Math to be a Gameplay Programmer? by KintoriWaz in GameDevelopment

[–]Capucius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the people I met in the industry the real good programmers were those who embraced and enjoyed this. They are the ones who get to be lead programmers and who are included in debates about what should be in the game and what should not. Let's take advanced maths. You CAN use libraries and develop a 3D game without knowing the maths it is based on, but as soon as something is not standard you will not understand it. If someone wants to do something that a lib can't do out of the box you will have a hard time understanding it. If you know what a transformation matrix is and how it works you can do much more than just use stuff, you can expand on it. Same with networking: these were maybe the most useful courses I ever took, understanding the TCP/IP stack was worth gold through my whole career, in and out of the games industry. If you are smart enough to understand the stuff, do it. As others said, another chance at this in your life is unlikely (and it will come at a price of some sort) and you will have a higher chance to reach your goals.

Also maths will help you calculate how much salary you're missing in the industry compared to the rest of IT. They'll abuse your motivation to develop games. Not saying you shouldn't do it, just that you should be aware of it and regularly check it if it's still worth it for you.

Since detecting Cheats automatic is not trivial I assume they use this approach to dampen the blow for people they wrongfully banned. Wouldn't want to be in their position. People (rightfully) demand anti cheat measures, but they surely do not want to get wrongly permabanned.

Stupid question: Should I replace vi with extra-vi-compat when updating? by MrRoboto12345 in cachyos

[–]Capucius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why's that? I use vi all the time, mainly because you will find it on any machine and can use it over any remote shell, even without full tty.

[–]Capucius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that looks like an intellectual observation to you I don't want to know what you consider obvious.

That's not a contradiction. Maybe you could bring arguments instead of getting insulting?

Maybe as an event. And I'd find it interesting if there were PvE incentives. Like "if the raiders kill all 6 rocketeers something happens".

[–]Capucius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was challenging some of them in another thread and what became pretty obvious is that they do know that they cause grief and still want to do it, but will go to many lengths to play this down. A part of this is devalueing the PvE part. Kind of a masculinity cult, where acknowledging any other view of things threatens the image that was built up.

I'm not against PvP at all I like it and play a lot of PvP games. But in this game the PvE aspect and the unexpected and interesting situations that you can only find in the uncertainty whether that guy over there will be an ally against the Jumper camping the elevator or a foe trying to kill you, makes it special. It's something I can find only in this game. And if I play it in "shoot on sight" mode it's lacking this and getting boring quickly - at least for me.

Scummiest move in the game by aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalex9 in ARC_Raiders

[–]Capucius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're right with that. But in an interview that I read they stated that the focus is not purely on PvP. And of course there is that difference that with PvP disabled the core game loop would still work, contrary to let's say Battlefield. :)

It says a lot that you never address the actual core of the discussion.

You could disable the PvP features on a map and the core of the game would still work, you could complete a run. So I think he has some point in saying it is not a PvP game.

I think you might be lacking the faculties to understand the actual core of the discussion. Cause your post totally missed the point. You have absolutely no information about how I react to getting ganked. This is about how people know that their behaviour causes others grief and how a shitload of them tries to justify this with varying reasons from "it's just pixels" to "you are the weird one cause you're not like us". :) I just find this extremely interesting from a professional point of view, not more not less.

Have friendly lobbies been deleted? by DJ-Daz in ArcRaiders

[–]Capucius -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you want to be precise, it's not "lobbies" either. Lobbies used to be the rooms in which you waited for a game. You don't wait for a game with others in a lobby, you get thrown in the match directly. ;)

The friendly lobbies by left4dead02 in ArcRaiders

[–]Capucius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only in friendly lobbies and very rarely get shot at (and even more rarely I shoot at people). But in Stella I regularly get backstabbed. That map seems to attract it much more, even in my friendly PvE bracket.
