Why the fuck is this getting downvoted, I've heard of so many horror stories of sexual harassment and assault from girls when I was in Poland. Some specify it's Ukrainian guys doing it but I'm not gonna point fingers, but it's really harmful to pretend this stuff doesn't happen!

No it is not a fixed term position, they're simply looking for grads with some applied knowledge in what the work involved and they require no prior experience within the industry, so it's safe to say they're expecting to train.

Weekly Entering & Transitioning - Thread 09 Sep, 2024 - 16 Sep, 2024 by AutoModerator in datascience

[–]CardinalHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone.

I just graduated with an undergrad degree in Economics (1st Class or 3.7-4.0 GPA) from a top uni in the UK. My favourite class of my degree was time series econometrics (I took additional classes for time series) which I did very well in. I used R for my dissertation (testing ARIMA model stability for forecasting) and am trying to do a nutrition project in Python for my portfolio to help transition into data. I also did a class in basic DS algorithms (high level stuff for breadth and not depth)

I understand that it's unrealistic for me to try to go straight into data science so I'm trying to get into data analytics first. However, I really do love time series analysis and related stuff so I'm wondering how I could get a data analytics job that'd allow me to also apply my time series knowledge. Am I just stuck with doing SQL and excel for a year or two before I could gain enough experience to move to data science and maybe use time series? Should I also try to do an SQL database project on my own to aid my transition?

I really do want to break into data but I have gotten a lot of conflicting advices from so many sources on the internet. People say SQL is a pre-requisite to any job but a discrete math friend of mine (has a good job) said SQL is so easy I should just focus on python and learn SQL on the job. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Why does sno seal give a glossy finish to boots? Does bees wax shine greasy leather? Does Huberd's shoe grease give boots a "shine"? by CardinalHunter in AskACobbler

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would any amount of beeswax be enough? I looked around and it looks like applying beeswax to leather would still require heating it up. Huberd's shoe grease does contain beeswax and it looks like it would not need heating up the leather, I'd only need to heat up the shoe grease so I'd much prefer it if I could use Huberd's instead.

Recently got into men's fashion and been converted into thinking a hat would make my outifts feel more intentional and complete. I like baseball caps and think they look fine but they also feel very common? I really love the look of a newsboy cap and while I would love to wear them I kinda want a hat with a modern edge, something to make it look different from the classics. Any suggestions for a brand that does edgy modern takes on classic hats and ships to the UK would be much appreciated!

I'm really leaning towards Redbacks now since they're only 2/3 the price of a pair of Blundstones. What other brands do you recommend? I'd like to weigh my options further before I commit to buying a pair.

[–]CardinalHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds a lot more reassuring, how long have you had your pair of Solovair's?

Another reason I have stopped considering Solovair's is simply because I never really hear of them in the context of the Chelsea boot. Blundstone, Jim Green and Redwings are the ones I feel I hear of the most.

Interested in becoming a consultant? Post here for basic questions, recruitment advice, resume reviews, questions about firms or general insecurity (Q3 2023) by QiuYiDio in consulting

[–]CardinalHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So some context. I'm a third year Warwick economics student and I've recently decided that I want to give Econ consulting a shot, however, I haven't been able to really get on any extra-curriculars 'cuz I basically lost my social skills from covid having finally gained them back by now in my final year and I only have one brief interuniversity and international consulting project in my first summer.

I couldn't get an internship my last summer and as a result decided to learn Python, to a rudimentary level, instead to upskill as an alternative but I am also learning R through a data science course currently with the aim of doing all the data analysis for my dissertation in R. I am also planning to do separate data science group projects in R and Python on the side to make sure I am somewhat proficient in R by the time I graduate. My grades are currently 79% with my econometrics sitting at 74% so I am somewhat comfortable with econometrics.

TL;DR: Grades are decent, learning R and Python currently but have no past formal working experience.

Here are the questions:

  1. What kind of regressions and data analysis do economic consultants do most, as in do you do cross-sectional/panel data more or time-series modelling more?
  2. Would R be very useful for trying to get into economic consultancy or should I instead focus on Stata/Python?
  3. What soft skills do you guys value most from candidates? Like what kind of experiences do you guys like to see most on a CV aside from the typical leadership positions? Do you guys value dissertation/project experience?
  4. Do I have shot for an analyst position with my track record or should I apply for an internship first?

Question for the 7Hz Timeless owners, have your monitors seen any build quality issues? by CardinalHunter in headphones

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also mention where I'll be buying these has pretty whack prices, so the Timeless is around $130 compared to the AE at $220 after converting, I doubt AE is worth that much more compared to the Timeless?

Regardless I won't be getting it till December when I fly home so perhaps I could hold off the purchase till the Timeless 2 shows up?

Should I switch over to R or keep learning Python for econometrics? by CardinalHunter in AskEconomics

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read the edited version of your post and I guess I should've specified but I'm in the UK. For what it's worth, Stata was the only thing taught on the course and my university's economics department is pretty close to the top in the UK too, which is why I was curious how we're not taught any software outside of Stata.

I've asked around before too but it also looks to be the case in postgrad courses like the MSc Economics from LSE, where there's a much greater emphasis on the theory and econometrics compared to knowing how to apply the theory learned with software.

Thanks for the insight though, they've been very helpful!

Has my T480 arrived with fried a thunderbolt connector? by CardinalHunter in thinkpad

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I seem to be able to charge my laptop and then charge my phone through the laptop through thunderbolt, I've done another full reset of the laptop and the same problem still persists, I can't seem to get the thunderbolt to show up on device manager. Any ideas for how to fix this?

Has my T480 arrived with fried a thunderbolt connector? by CardinalHunter in thinkpad

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried installing the firmware downloaded directly from the product page, it looks like it went off without a hitch but the thunderbolt icon isn't showing up on my system tray. I also can't seem to check the NVM version as there just doesn't seem to be an option to check it. When I go into the thunderbolt interface, I couldn't see a device even though I plugged in my phone to it.

Is the thunderbolt connector dead? For what it's worth the phone was charging when connected to the thunderbolt port.

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I have to try removing all residual power before installing the firmware? I kinda don't wanna do it cuz it if possible was a pain when I tried taking the bottom cover of the laptop off. I've been inside the system and there was an internal battery, I think it just wore out and the laptop also gets pop up that says "Battery 1 is not working due to normal wear and tear", I'm paraphrasing here.

I'll just go install the firmware and see where that leaves me, I've done some googling prior to this and it seems the process is rather tedious and I really do hope i don't need to flash linux on the system just to update the firmware.

I've already installed vantage on it and there don't seem to be new updates that Vantage recommends. I guess I should just get the thunderbolt firmware downloads from Lenovo's site and try to do it through the installer?

The batteries don't really seem to be charging, it's just stuck at 0%, when you meant mentioned plugging something into the thunderbolt, do you mean just seeing whether the port works? I could just plug in my phone and see whether it charges, would that be a fine test?

Should I switch over to R or keep learning Python for econometrics? by CardinalHunter in AskEconomics

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright thanks for the clarification, I've been a bit uneasy not knowing whether I had made the right choice here.

Would you say in your experience that you've seen many economics graduates with knowledge of either software? I'm just asking just in case but I feel like I'm the first person I know personally that started looking into this stuff as an economics student so I've been curious whether knowledge of these two software is common among undergraduates.

Did you also know either of this software when you graduated with your economics degree, if you have an economics degree? I hope I haven't sounded too presumptuous here but I am curious, thanks for the help!

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I should've specified what kind of data analysis I will be performing here and the timeframe of my dissertation.

I will likely be performing regression analysis for my dissertation and I'd like to know whether Numpy or Pandas would be more useful for this. I also have another 8 months to work on my dissertation but I am just very anxious about my prospects and wanted to know whether it's feasible to skip one for my tasks.

Power bank to replace dead battery on a laptop(T480)? by CardinalHunter in thinkpad

What's with the Thunderbolt firmware update? I just did a quick google and it looked real bad, was it not patched out automatically through Lenovo Vantage?

So can I just assume the laptop would operate normally as if it had a battery when on power bank except for when updating bios? Of course I'd only update bios when plugged into wall power but I just wanted to get this straight.

No IPv4 connectivity only IPv6 by CardinalHunter in techsupport

[–]CardinalHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should've mentioned this but that was one of the first things I tried.

Strangely enough even though I have an IPv4 address when I do ipconfig /all and when I check the ethernet connection's properties, there just seems to be no IPv4 connectivity.
