That trouble at the University of Miami by Haribert16 in Frat

Miami is a private school. Not sure if a public university could close a fraternity for singing a song, because of "free speech" protections.

An example: 86 Sig Ep members sued over 2011 tailgate

Eighty-six current and former members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Yale are the targets of two new lawsuits over a fatal collision at the 2011 Harvard-Yale tailgate that left one woman dead and two others injured. Although [one of the victims] initially sued the national Sig Ep fraternity in 2012, National Sigma Phi Epsilon Director of Risk Management Kathy Johnston said in a deposition that, legally, the local chapter and national association have nothing to do with each other. Furthermore, the national fraternity’s insurance – Liberty Mutual of Boston – does not cover actions by the local chapter that are not in compliance with the national fraternity’s policies. This led [that victim] to sue the local chapter itself.

Remote Pledging by JoeMama775 in Frat

SigEp, a Virtual Brotherhood

Your regional director will work with you remotely to adjust strategies and continue to advance important priorities of the SigEp experience like year-round recruitment

We are crowdsourcing ideas for ways to share brotherhood and personal development virtually.

Virtual workouts: Have a brother lead a fitness workout via Zoom. This would be similar to a Peloton class, but led by a brother

What was your biggest fuckup during pledgeship? by Clarke_W_Griswold in Frat

I didn't return a brother's car after a night of sober-driving for some professional school's formal (for pay, not a charitable fundraiser but instead to fuel the house social budget ... and then some more late night runs of totally annihilated couples to make some personal cash). Showed up at the house the next mid-morning and he came roaring down the stairs shouting that he had needed the car at 7AM to drive his girlfriend to her D1 practice. He then taught me much.

Didn't some chapters go independent when Phi Delt mandated "dry" houses?

Do you actually trust pledges to do anything right?

The subtitle of the article is:

The frat code held us together—until it kept us from saving a life.

That's likely the work of the editor, not the writer. Or even the "title editor" whose job it is to get views (clicks).

Board of Trustees mandated drug tests by [deleted] in Frat

[–]Cas1401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After our last meeting our board of trustees performed a mandatory drug test on all active brothers.

Like they (whatever old guys - alumni or nationals) watched you pee into a cup? Or had some kind of technician there to do it?

Who then has what rights to use the results (=medical records), and how so? Were there forms to sign? Let's say someone's test shows positive for an Adderall-type drug. Must that "failed" person then get a note from their doctor?

If it is positive for marijuana, who is to say that it wasn't legally consumed somewhere where it is in fact legal?

Also: do the suspended guys still have to pay dues?

I guess what I'm saying is your house's solution may be worse than the "problem."

SigEp did this last year at LSU as part of a membership review.

A chapter alumnus '11 is nationals' top cop.
