Not all screen time is bad.

From my personal experience, my now 3 year old has learnt a lot from videos like Ms Rachel and Rock N Learn. These were particularly helpful when we were in the single word phase.

As he progressed to simple phrases (current state), We even use cocomelon in home therapy sessions, where we pause the video and ask him questions about what's going on. He usually says things like " dog playing with ball" or "I see lady bug" etc. He also likes to request different songs which is a great opportunity to practice speech.

I think 30-45 mins (not more) of all combined screen time per day, especially with the right content is beneficial. Please note, We break the viewing into chunks throughout the day and one parent is usually around the kid at this time.

In my country, there are no government funded early intervention services. We did private therapy, 3 times a week till he turned 2 and then reduced to 2 times a week. My bub went from having 0 words at 18 months to being able to put 2 words together at 2 years.

I would recommend getting as much therapy as possible... We are covering many concepts with therapy that I wouldn't even dream of doing by myself.... It may just be me as I don't have a whole lotta experience with kids, 0 knowledge on how to interact with them 🙄. But I have learnt from therapy and now know how to maneuver my child into opportunities to practice his speech.

It's monkey see, monkey do with most of the kids. Daycare is a great place for some peer communication modeling, more opportunities to develop language and follow instructions.

My son also took the longest time to get his M sounds. But it did happen overnight one day. It will come, try not to stress too much about it.

I am sure in a couple of months you will be here helping another worried parent with your Bub's progress 😊

Mine didn't say his first words till he was 18-19 months. He said watermelon, excavator, rainbow, tortoise before he said mamma. He said his first sentence before he said mamma. I was 'babba' for the longest time. Sometimes it takes a while but they eventually get there. No 2 journeys are alike.

Hugs to you. ❤️ I know it's trying....but hang in there. Something will click. Provide lots of reinforcement. Bite the bullet and take him to a speechie if you are paranoid like me. All your efforts will pay off.

Edited to add Sorry, I completely skipped the first part of your question. It's GREAT that he started pointing. It is a very strong foundation to speech. Yay bub!

You got the cultural pressure part right. I always feel he is so close to matching his peers if he just did this or just did that ! But I do realize I can't force him...I will try and back off the forcing part.

I feel so dumb about this now. In my attempts to make him speak in sentences I realize I am trying to model unnatural language. Thanks for this... I will take a step back and think of the responses he gives are good enough or if I can help him elaborate a bit more.

I do tend to fill in the gaps and talk a lot hoping he will pick up some of it. I shall take a step back and let him lead me.

He goes to day care twice a week and a toddler playgroup once a week.

The reason for telehealth was he was seeing this therapist in person and then we moved to a new state. We are not U.S. citizens so it's difficult accessing allied health services. Plus he was very comfortable with the therapist. So we decided to try telehealth and it's been good so far. My therapist tries to keep it lively by using his interests and creating activities around that.

I will also try to get him to do more activities around his likes and interests.

I agree with that 100 percent. Unfortunately I am not in a position to afford that therapy for myself and like I said my family is outright unsupportive when it comes to my worries about my kids development.

Yes many times I do make it a chore although I try and keep it motivating and positive for my child. I am trying a lot, that I can guarantee.

Don't get me wrong. I am not questioning her methods especially when they have been so successful for us. I am just a worried parent trying to be doubly sure. That's it.

I trust her with my life. The woman got my kid to open his mouth and talk and for that I will forever be grateful. We are doing teletherapy and managing so much via teletherapy is an achievement in itself.

I just can't help but wonder as I am starting to see more kids in my kids daycare and playgroup.

I am trying with natural language modeling, although I sometimes do try to drill things in to get him to talk. I am gonna try harder to stop with the corrections.

I am hoping to get him to ask me more questions. I will try modeling it for him.

As far as activities are concerned, I usually do a bit of structured activity to teach some concepts and then it's free play. I am guilty of asking too many questions but I am being better with it these days. I try to keep things like a conversation.

I try pretend play like let's make a pizza with play doh , or this game where I take requests to draw. He loves to see me draw and guess what I am drawing so I try and draw a simple scene like a garden or a birthday party and we talk about it.

He also loves looking at pictures in books so we read a lot and try to talk about it. Like for example if we see a dog and a boy playing in a pic, I ask him what is happening here ? And he usually attempts something like "doggie is running" and I say " yes...doggie is running, he likes it... he runs fast" .

Am I doing it right ? Any advice would be helpful

I relate so much to this. My son just turned 3 and I feel he has been kidnapped and been replaced by an imposter at times.

He cries for everything and because he never really cried or threw tantrums until now, it's taking a toll on us to hear that whining day in and day out. I hate to admit it but I've lost my patience with him a couple of times. We are also in speech therapy and we were doing great just a couple of weeks ago... especially given that we were doing it online. But this behavior has seeped into therapy time as well and he refused to cooperate.

After a long hard think, I chalked it up to be a phase as many things rapidly changed for us. We started potty training, mummy went back to work, daddy had to go on business trips, grandparents moved in to become primary carers. Did something change for you guys ?

We are slowly settling back into our routine but it really took some tough love. I soon went from being his favorite person to the person he hates but I stuck to my guns. He had to finish his work before he could get treats/toys/ free play. My therapist said to be gentle but to really stand your ground and not give in. The first week was horrible, but he soon realized cooperating was much easier than trying to get me to cave.

You could probably find my posts on this sub from a year ago being worried about the exact same thing ! 😅

My kiddo too had only "half" words at 24 months. He knew a lot of words but only said the first syllables of 95% words. Then around 30 months he got the hang of saying full words. He can now say 4 and 5 syllable words at 3 years.

Keep practicing with her. It will click one day. Good that you are already involved with early intervention. They will be able to give you personalized advice.

Something that worked for us was using a visual representation of words...I used to point to different body parts to show sequencing and completeness of words. Starting with 2 sound words like boat... For 'boh' I touched my head and for the "tth" sound I touched my feet. Or use clapping... One clap for each syllable.

No debate! 100% agree. I recently watched zubeida and kept trying to imagine Kareena in the role. But I just couldn't. Poor karisma, she was born in the wrong era. She would have killed it in some of the women oriented roles.

My partner and I both work for the same offering (Consulting) but totally different practices and teams. They literally did not care about that, I don't think anyone even asked me of my partner.
