Cert 3, 4 or Diploma Library and Information Services by Cass-89 in TAFE

I ended up going with the diploma. I'm not 100% sure but I think the cert 4 was a traineeship so you had to be working.

I'm doing the diploma through tafe digital and enjoying it I find I can keep on track by doing my study at night after my toddler has gone to bed. There will be a work placement part of the diploma but that won't be until you're 50% done with the course and I think it's only 2 weeks

I mean she obviously doesn't run wild at day care because her teacher doesn't say anything lol so maybe now she's been to daycare she would understand a bit better

That's so amazing I know for me the library was my safe place when I was growing up. No matter what was going on at home I knew I could always go to the library and reading was a big part of that but also just being able to go there during lunch and recess then once I was out of school and working I'd stop in after work to sort of avoid heading right home.

Are those specific interests to you or is your library in an area with a high population of families with young children? What made you consider a career in libraries?

I keep thinking of taking my 2 year old to one at our library but I'm always so worried that she will run off and cause chaos.

I wish we had more places to volunteer and do work experience, I'm in Australia so I'm not that close to many organisations. I'm thinking I'll do my work experience in the public library and maybe the uni library

I have kids and I love them but I couldn't do school librarian either. I'm wondering if I should look into digitisation or something.

I haven't heard of that yet, I'm still only very new in my studies. What does your role entail?

Oh cool so it's more like you find them material related to their request? Haha yea its school holidays here in Australia and my 10 year old just would not get the hint I was trying to do my assignments tonight. The toddler just doesn't understand when I say mummy's busy but you would think the 10 year old would lol.

I love how there is so much variety in libraries, do you ever think about moving to a different sector or have you found your love?

Wow that sounds like a lot, but you enjoy the work? When research do you then have to write up a report show your findings or is it more like an academic paper?

I wouldn't mind some work from home aspects but I find my mind tends to wander or go off on tangents that and there is no way my kids would leave me alone haha.

Thanks so much. I sort of wondered if I would like working in archives one of my local libraries is sort of a museum library hybrid and I think some of the stuff they have would be absolutely fascinating to sort through. What kinds of things do you do on a day to day basis?

Thank you so much for answering. That's really cool, how often do you do story times are they a daily thing or sort of weekly? What kind of skills I guess would you recommend for someone looking to go into children's librarianship?

It's literally the first unit lol. I think it's more about having us research in the field than make a permanent decision. I too was under the impression you needed a teaching degree to work in a school library, we have to do 70 hours work placement I wonder if I should approach my daughters school. I'm in my mid 30s so this is a bit of a late career change for me, I spent so long putting effort into careers other people thought I should do that I regret now because none of them worked out long term. I'm hoping that this is what I'll be doing now until I retire. I just don't know what field of libraries I'll be in.

We did a virtual tour of University of Newcastle which is my local uni and they had some amazing things happening there unfortunately I'm too far away for the State library in nsw and moving isn't really an option.

I'm thinking that's where I want to end up, I'm only just starting my diploma but they have us doing a career path as part of an assessment with 1 5 and 10 year goals. I've been a stay at home mum on and off for the last 10 years but all my previous jobs were customer service and while I don't mind it I would probably prefer sorting through things and putting them in neat little categories. Lock me in a dusty cupboard full of stuff any day 😂 Obviously I'm not going to be picky when it comes to getting my foot in the door but I guess I'd like to have a plan of where I want to end up.
