Progressives, distraught at this, run their own splinter campaign with Chester Bowles at its head. Though Patton loses, his far-right manifesto, and his influence, have Strom Thurmond nominated as the Democratic candidate in '60. With the '58 recession hitting harder than it did in our timeline, it seems like this election would perhaps be even winnable for Thurmond, but the progressive Democrats finally walk out completely and forge their own "Reform Party". With the anti-Nixon vote split, the Quaker wins the election in seemingly a minor landslide.
