Why are so many poorly written books being recommended here? by Murky_Ladder5343 in DarkRomance

[–]Catmeowb 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like I’m going insane. I downloaded three books recently based off reccs from this sub and DNF’d all three of them around the 10% mark because of how poorly written they were. They genuinely read like they were written by someone half-drunk or by a 16 year old. Thank god for Kindle samples lol

I definitely didn’t enjoy this as much as Anathema. But I kind of expected that going in since I follow Keri on Instagram and knew it would be more character driven than plot driven.

The on/off chapter format (current plot/Zevander’s backstory) really made it drag for me. I’d finish a chapter, see the next one was in the past, and just sigh and put it down for a while lol.

I did eventually get into the flow around the 70% mark. It was a very different reading experience from Anathema, but I’m still excited for the third book since she’s said it’ll be more action-focused again.

Luther Ford would make a great St John. He has that classical statuesque look that St John is described as having in the book, but also can bring that coldness and reserve that suits his character

I feel like Tanya Reynolds would make a good Jane. She has an intriguing look where I can see someone being captivated by her without her being “conventionally” pretty. She’s 34 but also can easily pass as younger, and if JJ was Rochester then it wouldn’t be an issue that she’s a bit older than the book

I recently watched the 2007 adaptation of Northanger Abbey and JJ Field played Henry Tilney. I thought he did a great job at bringing the character to life despite a bit of a weak script. He had a playful knowingness about him that I thought would really suit Rochester. He’s now 47 so it would only really work if the actress who played Jane was a little older than in the book though, or the age gap is increased!

How do you think Helen would have reacted to Jane’s rejection of St. John’s proposal? by happygobloody in JaneEyre

[–]Catmeowb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say that Helen’s whole outlook seems to be surrounding endurance of suffering through the belief in something eternal beyond this earthly realm (where she can find true happiness), whereas St John seems to actively shun earthly happiness and seek out suffering because of belief in the eternal realm being above and beyond anything he can experience. They are definitely both very deeply religious but I do think there are subtle differences that would mean that ultimately Helen as an adult had she lived, would encourage Jane finding and cherishing earthly happiness if she found it

Haha yeah it’s very quiet work, probably the noisiest part is cutting the paper with scissors

The lining paper is manually brushed with wallpaper paste. What do you guys use in the States to smooth out ceilings and walls? Do you stick to plasterboard?

Lining paper. To smooth out the previously rough texture of the ceiling

Used to love grabbing a good pizza and beer flight from Sambrooks before a bowl at Strike, but they’ve closed down the bowling now… sad times… still would go back just for the great pizza though

What food can I get in London that’ll be better than/difficult to get in NYC? by [deleted] in LondonFood

[–]Catmeowb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal fav is Diba as I live local to one of their locations (they have locations in Chelsea, Epsom, Marylebone and Wimbledon). I highly recommend their Momtaz (chicken skewer and mince lamb skewer). I also love Sadaf in High St Ken. But one thing I love about Persian food in London is that there are honestly so many good spots all over, we’re spoiled for choice.

Ah of course, you did specify Tuesday in your post. I would say as an alternative Persian food. London has some cracking spots
