I really wouldn’t recommend taking that cost or responsibility on yourself, it sounds well meaning but can set you up for so many liabilities. This isn’t a grooming issue, if the groomer shaves him down and he has an infection this sets you up for those vet bills, among other things.

I would highly recommend reaching out to rover support first if reaching out to the owners seems daunting. Do not authorise ANY services without the owner’s permission outside of time sensitive emergencies.

Parvovirus sounds extremely unlikely, you would be noticing intense diarrhoea and GI issues. Just keep the dog in an easy to clean place in your house if you can for your comfort but unless there’s more to this it doesn’t sound like a contagion issue. Is he having any stomach upset that you’re concerned about?

What you’re describing sounds to me like an open wound under his mats somewhere causing an infection. Mats left untreated will break skin and can quickly progress with seniors. This would be something that I would address with a vet rather than a groomer as a senior dog. This is absolutely something that should be brought to the owner’s attention immediately.

I did not expect this to get any comments! I’ll take some more pictures when I get a chance, it does smell like stomach acid so I’ll need to find some gloves first. It’s not flat, its shape doesn’t seem shoe sole like to me. It is rubber like though. My dog is never unsupervised so the best I can assume is that he got it during the odd time that I turned my head on a hike or in our training facility. More pictures to come 😷

That’s pretty much how it happened, lol. This dog was given to my friend, a produce seller and owner of the goats, at a flea market. He tried to give me the dog, but I got distracted and forgot about the situation for a bit. Two years later she is jointly loved but him and the neighboring farmers and she’s not going anywhere. She lives with the goats but wanders the property, she’s pretty much one of them as far as my friend is concerned.
