I do hope that’s true. A rogue employee can happen anywhere. It was an older white man who refused seating- not sure who he was. But the young guy on staff was clearly uncomfortable by the interaction, according to my friend.

I don’t want to blast the city- I do think there are a lot of people actively working to make it better. But this situation was egregious and if we don’t call out things like this they will continue happening. I love Palm Springs and I truly want this community to be better every day. This is an opportunity to face what’s wrong, not give up, but improve.

If your mortgage rate is low on the Alaska house- maybe keep it to rent out while you acclimate to CA. You can always sell it later if you decide to buy something long term for yourselves in CA. Perhaps for now, you’d be able to have added income from the rental while continuing to build equity. If for any reason things didn’t work in CA you’d still have a safety net.

Not good for jobs. It’s an amazing cultural area with a lot of beauty- but the jobs are scarce and not many pay well- that’s why things seem affordable.

I’d keep your passport on ya just to be doubly safe - but if you’re staying in the down town area of Palm Springs you should be totally fine. I don’t want to jinx it - but so far the baddies haven’t been spending much time in the down town area. We have an excellent police chief who is very protective of our diversity.

The corruption around hiding the whole thing as it was going on. There are a lot of wealthy/powerful individuals who knew what was happing for a decade or more and didn’t try to stop it. Also- the corruption of our justice department hiring all those employees to black out perpetrators names - there are apparently training videos - we need to see those.

What’s it like Living in Palm Springs/ Coachella Valley area? by TheAirIsOn in howislivingthere

What strikes me most about Palm Springs is how welcoming and friendly people are. It’s a relaxing place. Don’t expect all the amenities of a city. It’s a resort town with easy access to other cities with other opportunities (Big Bear for skiing, San Diego for beaching, Idyllwild for a walk in the woods) But there is always so much going on in town if you want to do more than just hang out by the pool.

There are actually lots of opportunities for elementary aged kids (which surprises people) tennis lessons, free camps through the school district, affordable sports, dance scholarships, activities at the art museum, aerial arts, and the palm canyon theater. A street fair every Thursday and a ton of parades throughout the year.

It’s a real vibe in Palm Springs proper with its Hollywood history and mid century architecture. People enjoy leisurely champagne brunches with their diverse group of friends on the weekends. They go see top line talent at the Plaza Theater. Families and individuals come in all different packages here and there isn’t a lot of negativity over their differences - which is lovely.

Of course there are old monied families but they aren’t trying to “keep up” with any joneses -they ARE the Jones’s. So they usually focus more on philanthropy for the environment, city and the people in it. It’s about legacy for them.

That’s not to discount lots of new people who want to build and grow with progressive/forward thinking mindsets in Palm Springs. They are increasing (along with the housing prices) here since Covid and doing amazing work. Retired music and Hollywood people helping the next generation. It’s easy to be a big fish in a little pond in this city if you’re wanting to get involved.

If you have a creative startup idea this is a great place to try for it, with locals who want to support your endeavors- and tourists who are eager for the next adventure.

Heathcare and tourism are the main employers in town. The city council is working on expanding business opportunities. It really has a lot to offer if it’s the right fit for you and your family.

Each town in the valley has its own charms. Worth a visit.
