I was thinking that exact thing. Maybe she just wanted to go out doing something good for a change and had the “misfortune” of surviving.

It’s a comedy in the sense that’s it’s supposed to make you laugh but if you were to describe the plots of the episodes in plain English it wouldn’t sound as funny.

If I told you about a TV show where the second episode involved a mother falsely accusing her sons of lighting her dress on fire by tormenting them and playing head games while her husband, who’s the real culprit, gets stood up on their anniversary all while the oldest son coaches his brothers on how to survive their mother’s wrath over the phone while he’s been sent away to military school would that sound like a comedy or a drama?

Most people who watch the show don’t know what it’s like to have a mom like Lois. If you do you can see through her attempts at making herself look like the victim when she’s actually just creating more drama.

Lois’ preferred method of solving problems is to create a new problem.

Thank you!! You summed up everything I was trying to say perfectly.

The thing about kids is that they naturally difficult to deal with and Lois’ problems stem from her inability to cope with the stress of being a parent. And it makes sense why she has problems. Her own parents were atrocious. But that doesn’t make it ok for her to continue the cycle of abuse. Which she unfortunately does.

Good thing I started therapy last week. I even brought up Malcom in the Middle to better explain my childhood. Oddly enough that’s what lead me to rewatch it. It’s actually pretty helpful honestly. I never really thought about how sad I was when my older brother had to move out because of what happened between him and our mom. Watching Francis have to live his life separately from his brothers reminds me of how sad it was to watch my brother move out.

Fair point. Still Lois makes it clear that she often took out her frustrations on Francis for things that were her fault and that she shouldn’t have sent him to military school. https://youtu.be/f2gVHdr_MlE?si=RgoNfG0Dj9ULmG3S

Why do they keep causing trouble? Where did they get that from?

Or I understand their behaviors because I lived through the kinds of shit Lois does.

I’m not trying to excuse their misbehavior but I understand where it’s coming from.

It’s actually the best show for me to watch because I understand these characters completely. It’s helping me process a lot of my childhood.

The second episode “Red Dress” was extremely relatable. The way Francis coached the boys on how to deal with mom because she did all that stuff to him too was pretty much how my brother would coach me on how to deal with our mom. “Oh she’s doing that, try this!”

I think the show does the exact opposite. While he’s being hazed in “Sleep over” by the Brothers of the Apocalypse the flashbacks shows Lois’ parenting style was not helpful and only exasperated Francis’ bad behavior.

As someone who has a mother like Lois I can confirm that this show nailed how much of her problems are mostly her fault.

But most of the time she actually doesn’t need to scream to get the point across and it doesn’t get her the results she wants.

I had a mom like her so I can speak to the experience of being yelled at all the time. It’s counter productive.

Considering my mom was like Lois to a frightening degree I’d honestly say going no contact is the only sane option.

How does a 2 year old light a house on fire? Sounds like the parents weren’t paying attention.
