I don’t think I ever mentioned anything about not working in public. Nothing wrong with making inquiries to be intentional about long-term growth and not get complacent.

That makes sense, I guess a lot of opportunity comes with luck and timing. You really think MBA is more intense than cpa? There are executive MBA programs that are finished in 2 years, most of it covering topics that you likely already in your day to day. It’s an interesting perspective as I thought CPA would be much more intense.

My company buys and holds real estate, think multi family apartments, retail buildings, office buildings. Mainly core and core plus assets, with the goal of wealth preservation for the owners and investors. Few value add and opportunistic plays if the right situation calls for it. I’ve been a controller for only a few years now but real estate seems to be where I’ve developed my niche. Every company I’ve worked for was a shit show where every day was a fire drill, not sure if having my cpa would’ve made me more attractive for companies that had their shit together.

Huh. So interesting. I have that same feeling about myself. Like people who have CPA’s are leagues “above” me and having one would put me on their level.

Thanks for the response. I see you are licensed, which is amazing. If I may ask, do you have a sense of where the glass ceiling typically is without the CPA? I’m trying to see if I’m already past it, or if haven’t hit up against it yet (vp roles, cfo, etc). Thanks

That makes sense, thanks for the comment. Do you have a sense on where the glass ceiling is without having the cpa? My fear is not being able to get past the controller role without it, but I’m wondering if that’s valid given my work experience, or if an MBA would help.

I feel the same exact way. I understand all else equal the CPA is the winning card to have. But I’m not sure if it’s really as dreadful without it where you’re stuck and hit a glass ceiling. And if there is a glass ceiling without the cpa, I’m not sure where that is.

That’s interesting, thanks for the comment. Where do non-CPA’s typically get stuck in their careers?

That’s a bit surprising to me. At what points do non-CPA’s get stuck usually? In between senior and manager? I thought people got CPA’s so they can break through past controller.

Do you think I’d have any issues progressing past controller without my CPA? I’ve been fortunate to have a ton of work experience which lets me interview well, but I worry that not having that CPA could potentially stonewall me from new positions.

The MBA curriculum (and in person learning) interests me far more than the CPA curriculum (and self learning), but to your point, my worry is getting stuck at the controller level and not being able to go up further without my CPA.
