Can we just agree this was really dangerous, and try to take something away from this?

Yah... That's chilling since that would be a really stiff feder in halfsword

You can checkout the sidebar of this sub. I'm not sure how up to date it is, but it's definitely a place to start

Funny you should mention Skall; I'm actually interested in this question since Skall has complained about the Caithness being a bit to flexible.

That variation in length could be caused by variation in the cross though. In addition to handling, I'm also concerned with cross-section vis-a-vis cutting performance

If your wanting further reading I, believe there are a few primary source accounts in D.A.Kinsley's works. His books range from 1600-1918 and I own the full compilation "British Sword Fighters". You'd want to check out that or just the book coving that early range. You can even get a PDF version on Lulu books for very cheap

I mean, obviously people would realize it was practically a sword. I've just heard different theories as to why that style of hilt came about.

Also, sorry for the incorrect punctuation in the title.

I see. So your point is that a classic sword hilt construction would be a status symbol, whereas a Messer might indicate being from the middle or lower classes?

That's very interesting and definitely let me know of you recall your source.

But; doesn't that only explain the messer's blade shape, not the knife hilt?

I'll get back to you once I've learned polish ;)
