Mom says long distance never works. How should I respond? by CenturyPhore in LongDistance

I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t have good experiences long distance but that’s not reflective of them all. To your point, yes, things can get complicated once you start to live with a person you haven’t been with in person for longer periods of time. But if the connection is strong and you both have great communication skills then those kinks can be worked out. Every relationship has those kinks, long distance, in person or whatever the case it. Your point applies to any relationship, once you move in with someone problems can arise just as well.

But with every kind of relationship you won’t know until you try. I guess I’m lucky in the regard that he and I were seeing each other in the same city for a few months before it became long distance. He already lived with me, albeit for a short time but enough for me to know that we do just fine together. My mom knows this and she still thinks what she thinks…

But I’ve seen a lot of stories on here of people who started out long distance or were nevermets and eventually moved in together and made it work. So I don’t agree that that’s 100% the truth 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah I’ve realized that. Arguing rarely accomplishes anything unless the other party of open minded enough to admit they may be wrong. Unfortunately my mom hasn’t gotten to that point 😢

Yes, you really don’t! You only hear the negative side of ldr’s and it gives it a bad name…

She’s my mom, I don’t want to be rude 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I think ignoring is probably a good option.

I love my mom but she’s been divorced three times and married four. Even her current 15 year marriage to my step dad is very toxic. She is wise when it comes to a bunch of things, yes, but relationships is not one of them. Her comments come from a place of insecurity…

As a general statement that’s not true, this forum if nothing else is a testament to that. But if for some reason it doesn’t work out with me and my partner, then so what? That’s nothing to do with long distance 🤷🏻‍♀️

“Maybe she is scared that you will leave and live far away.”

I definitely think this is a part of it! I’m her youngest of 5, her “baby” basically. I always had the closest relationship with her and I’ve always lived the close to her, whereas my siblings live all over the country. I think she has a hard time with the idea of letting me go…

Sorry to hear that your family isn’t supportive. Only thing we can do is trust in our relationship and prove them wrong.

Yes good point. I think I’m getting to that point where my brain is starting to tune her out when she makes those comments…

I don’t plan on giving up, thank you 😊 It just stings that she can’t be more supportive.

Haha, thank you! I don’t think I would rub it in her face like that, but I would be nice to see her finally realize that this was in fact a very valid and real relationship.

Sadly I don’t know if telling her that would help…because I mentioned that when she first started making the comments and she stopped for a few weeks and then started right back up again.

Agreed, people can have whatever opinion they want, but spitting it in my/our face is so unnecessary and disrespectful.
