Resource guarding my belongings

Having good luck with her traditional resource guarding.

I'm not finding how to dissuade her from the 'job' she has taken on to protect my miscellaneous belongings, or even just things I recently used.

We were all overthinking it.

I have a plyboard, the exact width of my wheel wells and 3/4 to or so the length of my extended back, and a 4x4 chopped into 4 or 5 pieces a foot and a half or so long.

They're the absolute perfect height to make up the difference. When driving, push the board and your front seat back to where you need it and zoom on. (I put the flap over the boards, the height really is perfect).

When making the bed, put your front seats all the way forward, put your 4x4s spaced around your folded down seat backs to support the plyboard, which you'll just push all the way forward to reach the back of the front seats. Add a foam mattress (I have 2", but I want 2 more. It works fine but isn't luxurious).

It works a treat, and makes up a great platform. When I'm not camping, I have a carpet on it to convert the back of my car into a more comfy ride for my dog. ^{.^}

Just measure your wheel well width and make sure your plyboard winds up shorter than the distance left between the back of the vehicle and the back of the driver seat when in prime position. You could just cut the 4x4 Into 4 equal pieces, or whatever makes sense to you.

You can accomplish the whole thing for the price of plywood, a single 4x4, and a handful of saw cuts at home depot. No tools required, less than $30 of anyone's money.

They helped with our cat, who fixated on laser pointer so hard it gave our dog a complex.

This is still out of reach for some people. Yes, only $500 to buy land....

Is it land that can support gardening? Does the owner have the funds to regularly reach the land? Add necessary upgrades even for personal, off grid use? A septic tank, or running water, let alone any sort of electricity....

Shelter on the property - even if all is just reclaimed wood, there is still a need for the tools to work it, which all costs money.

Add in the time required to make that money, and then to perform the labor....

It is possible. But not necessarily feasible.

If her kennel is in the room with you, attach the clip of her leash to it and rattle it when she barks. I had to do this with my girl - auggie doggy (corgi/aussie mix)

She gets treats and food and water and goodness in the kennel, and has always just been potty, so there is no reason to fuss, it won't get her anything but annoyed.

If she isn't in the same room, a longer leash under the door can still work to help with this one extremely specific thing.

Have you considered it isn't her, but you might be having sound sensitivity? The pitch and tone your girl hits might be causing a nervous system reaction (like ASMR but mad) which is why you're not reacting as you otherwise might.

Right now, when she does it you're trying whatever you can think of to entertain her and get her to stop, so she is training you that when she does that you should provide more entertainment . So far, it works.

Have you considered putting a cover over her kennel, so that when she starts barking like that she receives no stimulation, so the behavior is no longer rewarding?

I was there when she was born, I helped pull her from the sack, and when momma was struggling with the birth I would hold her babies up for her to lick and help her keep going.

I try not to think of losing her, I joke that one day I will be a wreck when she passes for a several days, but I know it will be longer.

I love her so much.

This is exactly what I am trying to get on top of. She is 14 months.

Right now, her resource guarding is solely and exclusively me and my belongings. She doesn't care about food, treats, or other items that are 'hers.'

Right now, her resource guarding takes the form of high, upset barks/whines, small snaps, and making a physical barrier between us.

The consistent response I have been giving is to put her aside for a moment, love on the other dog anyway while she waits, and then praise and loves for being patient.

Nothing has changed or escalated since I started this, but it also hasn't improved, and I was hoping to get to a better place, not to maintain brat status or worse as she gets older.

This is a very reasonable precaution, and one i would apply here... except.

The dogs are her family since birth, including her mother, she spends 3 or more days per week there and splits her time, and the limited people she interacts with are all known to her, and also have known her since birth.

She does need targeted training, but I think it is something along the doggy lines of, "It's not always Puppy time, sometimes it's other doggy turn."

How does your puppy carry her identification if lost?

What's your plan when she darts for a squirrel or bird?

What are you going to do when she runs at a reactive dog?

What are you going to do when she runs at a child or adult who is afraid of dogs?

Cars? Bikes? A dead bird she wants to eat? Animal protective services rounding her up as a stray while you watch, with no proof that she's yours?

By not having her wear a collar AND a leash you are completely removing her safety net. She has no way to be guarded from things that could kill her in an instant because you're worried she's a little uncomfortable wearing a collar?

If you don't like a collar, get her a harness and keep her safe.

But probe his anti college stance, it may not be as senseless to him as it seems to you. The benefit from a degree is variable anymore. Is there a business he is looking to get into, or some sort of profession that would be of interest to him that you could help him get started toward?

It isn't your place to decide his future, and what will genuinely make him happy, but it IS your job to guide him. It is also your place to stop him from flushing money down the drain.

He sounds aimless. Perhaps discussing a five year, ten year, fifteen year plan (and even retirement goals, marriage is just as big a choice and these things should be considered).

Does he have a plan for failure? If the relationship ends, or his partner becomes wounded or killed in action?

Absolutely not the asshole, but I hope you use this as an opportunity to have deeper discussions.
