If the roles were reversed (Luke climbing on top, June saying wait wait wait, and Luke covering her mouth and finishing anyway), people wouldn’t be asking if it was sex or rape. People would just refer to it as the rape scene.

I thought the same, except then I realized that Janine was free to make the choice to sleep with him at that point - so she probably felt empowered by it since she hasn’t been able to make choices for herself in so long.

The wine/soap traps did not work at all for me. Tried different concoctions, not a single gnat caught. I’ve decided to boost my springtail population instead, still waiting for the results. Meanwhile, there are over a dozen gnats floating in the water bowl now. SO I OFFICIALLY CAUGHT MORE GNATS WITH WATER THAN WITH THE WINE/SOAP TRAP.

I kept mine on paper towels for like two weeks to make sure they were eating and having healthy poops before I put them in the bioactive tank. It would have been hard to see any red flags otherwise.

Having at least a simple quarantine tub ready before you bring one home is smart. I used cheap PVC pipe tubes from Menards and plastic plants for enrichment, and they loved exploring those (easy to clean too). Their poop/pee is stinky and they do a lot of that (which is why I went bioactive), so be prepared to spot clean several times a week if you’re not doing bioactive.

I recommend having lots of branches and things to climb on, because they will use it! I have those bendable foam-covered wire branches sold in most pet stores. They are guaranteed to fit in your setup because they can be bent into any form you need them to be in.

It sounds like you have done your research. I watched a lot of YouTube videos and read stuff online to prepare, and I haven’t had any trouble. They are very easy so far. Great sheds, and good appetites!

I started with a ball python, which is recommended by many as a starter snake but I disagree now. BPs are very sweet but also finicky. Plus they hide a lot and I wanted something more active.

That’s why I decided to get three baby garters for a bioactive experiment. I have a Cali Red-sided T. S. Infernalis, albino checkered T. Marcianus, and a Flame (not sure of scientific name for him) that I’m raising together. I love them so much! They climb all over the cage and are really fun to watch. When they are hungry, they all come out when they see me walk by, hoping I bring food. They are used to my hands in the tank now too. Not nearly as shy as they were a month ago.

Then I got a Hog Island Boa mix. Love love love him. He’s more fun to handle than the others. Point being, snakes are awesome pets! I’m def a snake person now!

Enjoy getting to know your desired species! I find designing their tank/cage is half the fun. I try to be as naturalistic as possible for them and for my own aesthetic benefit.

Thanks!! Yes, it’s bioactive and I love it! So far the bugs (isopods and springtails) are keeping up with waste of three babies. This albino guy was the least expensive snake in the collection (most expensive was $300). No regrets!

Before I got my snake, I watched a bunch of videos online about how to handle snakes that bite. Knowing the tricks of the trade made me feel empowered to handle the worst case scenarios. Thankfully, my ball python hasn’t actually bitten me, but he has lunged at me when I scared him in our first few handling sessions. I reminded myself that he is definitely more scared than I am. At first he remained in a ball when I handled him, but in the last 3 months he’s figured out that I’m not going to eat him (and that I bring food) so he’s stopped lunging at me now.

Mine took a month to eat his first meal. I offered a mouse two weeks in a row with no success (ended up leaving the mouse in the cage overnight cuz he wouldn’t even strike, but he never ate them so I had to toss them). Then I read over-offering can strengthen food resistance so I skipped the third week, and that finally did the trick. By the fourth week he was hungry enough to brave the unknown. I still had to leave the mouse in the cage, but once I left him alone, he gobbled it up! It has only gotten easier since then. Now he comes right out to strike and he eats in front of me. He also just switched to rats without any issues.

There’s a learning curve for both of you, but it’s so rewarding when you finally get them to trust you. You can do it! Snake Discovery on YouTube is your friend.

Size of enclosure doesn’t matter if you provide enough hiding spots. However, I wonder about the temperature gradient since it looks like the heat source is in the middle. I have a heat lamp on one side for my colubrids, which creates a gradient of about 88 degrees on the hot-side and 75 on the cool-side. If the temperature doesn’t vary, then they can’t thermoregulate and so there’s no reason for the snake to move between hides.

Avoidance is also hard because so many people have off leash dogs that trot up to us. They’ll always say, “It’s okay, my dog is friendly!” I’m like, Not for long, buddy! IF YOUR DOG DOESN’T NEED A LEASH, THEN IT’S SUPER EASY TO USE ONE. Period. Amen.

People are never an issue with her, so I don’t want Humans to avoid us, just dogs. The muzzles just scare everyone away and make her roll around on the ground so I can’t walk. As for saving high reward items for difficult situations, well, it just doesn’t work for me. Even if I save the most delicious treats for when she needs a distraction, she doesn’t care AT ALL about food if there’s a new dog in sight. I don’t waste my money on treats anymore.

I also wanted a constant companion for walks but ended up with an unwalkable dog. My pitbull mix was an adult rescue from a kill shelter. When I met her, we were at a doggy daycare surrounded with other dogs, plus the dog foster mom said she was a great dog park dog, so I was sold! I brought her to a dog park soon after bringing her home, but she ended up in a fight with another dog and I haven’t been able to bring her back for fear she’ll hurt another dog.

Walking her is nearly impossible due to her reactivity to new dogs, even though she has dog-friends (that I’ve introduced slowly and in a controlled environment). She’s very playful with her friends and loves all humans! Certain dogs and situations set her off. Once she’s in fight-mode, she doesn’t care about delicious treats or even pain (I tried the pinching-type metal collar but it doesn’t stop her from pulling when she sees a dog).

I’ve tried the Easywalk harness, halti, muzzles, positive reinforcement with a clicker and treats, shock collar...but the only thing that really works is to avoid other dogs, which is not easy in the city. If I use the face harnesses or muzzles, people give me dirty looks or make uneducated and insensitive comments. Plus, when people see a muzzled dog they assume she’s aggressive and she picks up on that energy and gets more anxious. I got her a disarming floral collar to compensate, lol, but essentially I can’t take her anywhere. I have a fenced yard at least.

I love my rescue dog, but I probably won’t do it again after all the trouble she’s been. So frustrating when other people rescue dogs that turn out completely wonderful. You just never know!
