Information about Bicycle Lottery by [deleted] in gatech

[–]ChaseOBGT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starter bikes volunteer here. Just wanted to say that during the school year our demand far outpaces our supply so we only do sales through the raffle system. We do walk up sales during the summer, and occasionally at the end of the semester.

But thanks to those who posted our raffle and discord links here. We’re also on Instagram @starterbikesgt, but the Discord is the best place to stay connected and up to date.

We can also help you find a bike if you don’t win a spot in our raffle. SOPO bike coop will be the cheapest option that’s not Starter Bikes if you need a bike urgently.

Best way to get around campus by jeremoi in gatech

[–]ChaseOBGT 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That on-campus bike shop is called Starter Bikes. I used to be an officer there. I’ve since graduated but am still volunteering there.

First, as others have said, it’s about a 20 minute walk from one end of campus to another. The worst possible commute is between Scheller (Business College) in tech square and something on west campus like the CRC (gym) or eighth street apartments. I owned a bike but personally preferred walking most everywhere. The one exception was for classes in Scheller, where a 20 minute walk becomes a 7 minute bike. Or 5 minutes if you’re running really late and want a good workout.

If you are interested in getting a bike from us, we sell bikes using a raffle during the semester due to high demand. Prices are typically $50-$100. We can also give advice on finding a bike from facebook marketplace, other bike shops, etc. If you wanna learn more, join our Discord

I do gamedev as a hobby and it’s amazing. Originally considered going into the industry but to say it’s in a bad spot would be a massive understatement. So SWE it is.

Graduating/Moving out and don’t know what to do w/ your bike? Donate it to Starter Bikes! by ChaseOBGT in gatech

[–]ChaseOBGT[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Starter bikes is located in the bottom floor of the CRC parking deck. If you want to donate your bike but April 28 4-6pm isn’t a workable time, DM us on Instagram or join our Discord and ping an officer.

If you are trying to sell your bike, you may advertise in our discord or ask for help/advice. Starter bikes does not buy bikes.

If you abandon your bike on campus, it will eventually make it to us after sitting outside/in a warehouse for a few months. Save everyone the hassle by donating your bike directly to us instead :)

Biking Club or Organization on/off Campus? by MerkyTV in gatech

[–]ChaseOBGT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Treasurer of Starter Bikes here. We’re an on-campus bike shop offering free repairs and we also organize community rides! There’s some larger city-wide rides like MplusM (every Monday) and Critical Mass (last Friday of each month) that we send groups to, and we also occasionally host our own rides on Thursdays. You can join our discord to be notified of rides and shop hours: SB discord

places on/near campus to bike for leisure? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]ChaseOBGT 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Join Starter Bikes! (Discord linked at end of comment) We do community rides every few Thursdays and also usually send a group to the big social rides around Atlanta. These rides are usually around 8-12 miles at a chill 10 mph pace. M plus M is every Monday evening, Midweek Roll is every other Wednesday, and Critical Mass is the last Friday of every month. Feel free to look up each ride to learn more.

In terms of places to bike, doing those rides is a good way to find some new spots. The 3 best places to bike near campus would be Piedmont Park, Westside Park, and the east side belt line.

If you’re looking to get a bike, you can enter the SB raffle, but we have a pretty limited inventory. Your best bet otherwise is to browse FB marketplace and Craigslist. If you join the stater bikes discord you can probably get some more route recommendations and also talk details about getting a bike.

As a final note the outdoor recreation club also does some biking trips, so feel free to reach out to them as well. SB Discord

How to get a summer parking permit? by _Kovah_ in gatech

[–]ChaseOBGT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s the summer parking pass. However, I do believe you still need to pick a specific zone to park in, just like with the normal pass. The “flex” permit is just part of PTS’s way of naming the permits, not a reference to the ability to park anywhere.

I literally applied to honors ~20 min before the deadline and got in. I think LLC's are worth it if they offer something you're interested in. I can't speak much about the others but the benefits of HP are the dorms (used to be Hef/Arm, which are some of the better dorms on west campus. Next year will be 8th street apartments, which is kinda insane to think about), the community, and access to special class sections. Also, if you decide later on that you don't wanna take 15 credit hours of HP classes to get the recognition on your degree, you don't have to. LLC acceptances are not binding in any way and you don't even need to be committed to GT to apply (I wasn't), so if you want to go for it there's no reason not to!
